The Ultimate Commute
 

I watched this fellow on the local news tonight and thought to myself, 'What a swell way to turn that dull commute to work into something to look forward to getting up in the morning'.

I saw something similar here a few years ago about a bike/boat commute in NYC. This Edmonton commute looks so much more pleasant.

I've been bike commuting year-round for 28 years and the first thing I thought when they showed him on the river was, "what kind of lighting would I rig up if this were my commute?".

Then I wondered how he did this in the winter, especially the canoe part.

But I totally get his motivation. My bike commute is also the best part of my day, too.

I was a bike commuter before I retired. It was often a high point of my day, and allowed stress relief on the way home. I didn't have the canoe leg on my commute, but it did include a lakeside park and a trail through a nature preserve. The nice thing about working in a hospital is that showers and changing facilities are available for employees.

I had a friend who was a NYC fireman, stationed at a firehouse 2 bocks from the beach in the Rockaways, NYC. As he lived about 8 miles east he would park his car at a boat launch near his house, then kayak down the ocean to near the firehouse He would fish along the way, often times catching enough for dinner for the night crew. .

When I lived in LA commuted along the beach bike path from south Redondo to El Sequndo. Multiple miles along the beach with only a couple miles of surface streets from the beach to the office.

Man, what a gorgeous commute. Could ride year round, only a couple dozen days where the weather was less than near perfect. In the winter time I would see the sun rising in the morning and sunset on the commute home. Only problem was avoiding all the bikini's on roller skates, or at least hitting them in such a way to ensure a soft landing.

The commute home upriver might be a bit tiring.

I've commuted to work on a bike since I was 15 years old, the only time I didn't was my first move to the Mojave Desert of Calif which for 7 years I had a 68 mile commute! A bit far for a daily bike ride. My first commutes took me along the coast of the Pacific as well and into the city, but later it was all city commuting through Los Angeles, Glendale etc. Anyway all my commutes were rather short, and when I was living along the coast and in LA I was doing some racing so after work I would meet up with the club and do training miles, then afterwards ride home.

Around here more and more people are using automobiles minimally. If you want to see more bicycle commuting you have to move companies out of city center and more in the the industrial areas of the suburbs. People will not generally bicycle commute more than 10 miles. And it is expensive and pointless for companies to situate in large city centers.
