plastic saddle
 

so i am looking into making a cheap fixed gear into a rain bike. so i want to put fenders on it and get a plastic saddle that wont absorb water so when i sit down after being in class and it has been raining i dont get a sponge effect.

so ive been doing a little looking and found this so far:

i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with that or would recommend anything.

another route is going with a pivotal seat and post but i dont remember what size seat post i have and if i can find a post long enough since i want this bike to have a pretty aggressive position with drop bars.

I am trying to do this on a budget since i will not be riding this everyday.

well i dont see myself riding more than 20-30 miles at most. id probably ride 4-8 miles a day on average

Get whatever saddle that suits your butt (and your wallet) and use a saddle cover or a plastic bag when leaving it locked up.

well i hate the bag/cover idea cause it will be sunny when i go to class and come out an hour or two later and it will be pouring when i come out. Plus id rather just have something plastic that i dont have to deal with the cover.

thats what im kinda looking for. i think the selle italia is gonna cost more than i paid for the bike...

I did this for a while myself, for the same reasons. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend it. Never ridden the Spyder before, but I used a Kashimax. Short errands and such weren't a problem, but anything over 5 miles had my ass seriously hurting. I won't even ride that saddle now unless I absolutely have to.

IMO, get something with a bit of padding and a vinyl cover that won't absorb water.

I rode plastic bmx saddle for a while. It hurt like hell on any trips where I pedalled while seated for more than 10 mins.

This is a guess but do you ride in Arizona?

as for riding in the rain, I will say from experience riding around in the summer monsoon season that a bag is the way to go. As for riding in rain in general, By the time you have ridden in pouring rain ruining your clothes, books, ext. it gets tired real quick. I wouldn't buy an expensive saddle for something you may do a handfull of times, but hey if that's your thing go for it.

The bmx saddle will be uncomfortable but it's the cheapest solution to your question and I think it would hold up better, but I really have no experience with riding plastic saddles good luck to you.

I have a tioga d-spyder on my bmx race bike. I wouldnt put it on any other bike. Its light and looks cool but its not really meant to be sat on for any length of time. Its very narrow and flexes in ways that dont comform well with your anatomy. That saddle is meant for bikes that are meant to be pedaled while standing like bmx bikes and dirt jump bikes.

Any decent non-leather road saddle will suit your needs.

I use a storika saddle. Pretty good on the rain but expensive these days. I agree with the above, wrap your saddle with something non absorbent. McMaster Carr might have small pieces of plastic you could glue over the top. Something a little thicker than a garbage bag. You can but all sorts of thicknesses of pond liners. A good irrigation supply shop may have some samples that would be big enough

I would try a vinyl saddle with less padding first... I have a few, mostly cheapos, and they don't absorb a significant amount of water. I usually carry a rag so I can wipe the saddle and front rim if it's been raining, which is good enough for me.

Living in Florida I know your woes for unpredictable rain. I would say ditch the plastic idea, I couldn't imagine riding on plastic for anything further then a block.

When I was locking up at campus I used a viynl Vetta I found off a generic 80's MTN bike. I could wisk the rain water off the top of it after getting out of class and it was rather comfortable for what it was. I can't say what it felt like using in a agressive riding position being that I ride bikes with bars above saddle height.

I let my toupe sit in the rain and get soaked every time it rains, seats fine, your butt will get wet anyway

Get a saddle you like.
Get a quick release seat post and take the saddle off of the bike when you go inside.
Saddle stays dry and, as an added bonus, the bike is less attractive to thieves.

Seriously, I never bother covering my saddle since it's going to be raining anyways for the ride home.

Made from EVA foam (the same stuff as Crocs), so it is waterproof. It is comfy compared to your plastic idea as long as its wide enough for your seat bones.
