Barn bike #3. Work cohort was cleaning out his barn and had 3 bikes he was sending to the dump. The first was a Miyata six ten (posted a few pages back) the second was a Huffy that is about to become a Ghost bike for a local cyclist that lost his life by a hit and run driver at 1am in Kennesaw a couple weeks ago. :(

This is the 3rd that he dug out and I picked up a week ago. He bought this bike new to do a Equestrian Triathlon. Horse, Bicycle, run. Been in the barn for 15 years. Tires still had whiskers. Its a 1989 or 90 (all the Shimano prats are NI date code) GT All terrain Outpost. Shimano 200 through out. Biospace cranks, Cro-Mo frame, Araya rims. Threw some tires and tubes on it cleaned and greased everything and dialed it in.

Its a ball to ride. I was jumping it through the ditch in my yard for an hour like a 12 year old (I'm 42). Sure the neighbors think I lost it now. It is a little small for me, little big for the wife and a little nice for the irresponsible teenage daughter (she has had one bike stolen already). Cleaned up good. and already on CL. May be sold by the end of the day.

Going to pick this Huffy tandem up on Friday, looks like it needs alot of TLC

ok - seems we in Central PA are the only folks here today. :o

Here are pictures of the Overland. I'd have to guess this is not the original paint, but I'm interested in hearing what folks think would be going as going "too far" when we (my son and I) put this back into service.

Some of these are hard to make out. The bike has skip-toothed rings fore & aft, and the rear hub is a New Departure (coaster brake). I've heard of these, but this is the first time I've noticed seeing one. It looks almost new under the dirt.

High Fist Shin 12-25-08 04:50 PM

You're not the only PA folks in today. ;)

Here are two recent catches I just finished reconditioning.

Nishiki Custom Sport:

This bike has a monster low gear. Look at the size of that rear cog. 34 teeth I think.

Peugeot PH10LE:

I replaced the the Weinmann 500 brake calipers with a nicer set of Shimanos, added aero levers and polished the heck out of everything. :)

Check out that extra long chain guard! Very cool! Nice bike!

I thought that was cool also. And I never thought I would have a bike with a chain tensioner between the cranks...

Elad63 12-26-08 12:11 PM

do you know the year on your tandem

brandenjs 12-26-08 12:17 PM

I'm not sure, someone told me it was from the 60's, but I have not done alot of research on it. I haven't even looked for a serial number to check either. I know this thing is heavy as a tank...It's great for parties, everyone wants to take it for a spin..After a few drinks it is pretty entertaining..

Drakonchik 12-26-08 10:50 PM

Looks like the Peugeot PH10LE has a slightly bent fork.

Optical illusion. It was slightly bent, but I got it repaired at a local frame builder for a Jackson. :D I got it repaired then took the picture.

fiataccompli 12-27-08 09:17 AM

is the bent fork thing an inside joke at bikeforums? I mean, a lot of times the cameras lens make forks look wonky...i've noticed it with my own bikes.

Centurion Elite RS that I got off the local Craig's List last week. SN# N465673.

A basement queen that is still dusty dirty and cobwebby with a little rust, it should clean up very nicely. I am starting to like the dark copper/bronze color, it has metal flake in it that I discovered when taking these pictures today (first time to see it in the daylight).

It has bronze brakes, a bronze big ring and a bronze front rim, I am suddenly getting OCD and must have a bronze rear wheel, HELP!

A quick search only turned up info to verify that this is a nice bike, can you point me somewhere?

Thanks!

Nice find Jack!

Did you get taller? :D

cycleheimer 12-27-08 04:56 PM

That Centurion Elite sure is pretty lookin'! Just looked at a Centurion Elite RS from a 1984 Centurion catalog on SheldonBrown.com (Harris Cyclery). Those bronze-colored components are awesome!

cycleheimer 12-27-08 05:00 PM

Almost forgot, on that Centurion Elite RS ... all the specs, scanned from the '84 catalog, are on SheldonBrown.com

Thanks Cyclehieimer, that is very interesting! Since bronze is not listed (super metallic maroon and ice blue is) but bronze is listed under the Elite GT, do I assume that it is not 1984? But everything else matches.

It does look pretty darn close.

cycleheimer 12-27-08 07:36 PM

On the Centurion Elite RS...the '84 catalog mentions the rims as being "dark anodized finish"? What a couple of others guys have done with their Elite RS' ...

Picked up a decent 1984 Schwinn World Sport with Suntour AR components for $12.50 at the local thrift store. They had a half off sale. I passed on an interesting mixte for $15. It had a rotten rattlecan paint job. Would have made a decent donor, but my workshop is full.

bigbossman 12-28-08 12:26 AM

Not a lot of "catching" going on around here. Ever since gas went to $4 a gallon, everyone and their brother started flipping bikes and the supply dried up pretty quickly. Even though the price of gas has since dropped precipitously, there are few decent and cheap bikes to be found.

However, I did manage to recently grab a couple of meager finds.

1) A mid-70's Motobecane mixte that I bought complete as a rolling basket case. I tore this one down and replaced the bb, cottered crank, tires, tubes, cables, housings, and bar tape. While I was at it I rebuilt all the bearing interfaces. Mechanically as new, it went out the door as someone's Christmas present and will begin a new life pulling campus/about town duty for a freshly minted college coed. Not a bad job, methinks, and certainly a better one than rusting away under the tree I found it leaning against.

2) A little Schwinn Traveler III frame and fork I talked TIOS out of. I've already added a headset, and will build this one out of the parts bin as a standard 12 speed (or maybe hang a triple on the front and go for 18). It'll be a nice little bike, and I may hang onto it until early spring so the Cinderella riders (local women/girls only century/metric ride) can get a crack at it.

BBM, great job on the Motobeagle.

Here's one I saved from the dump and my first attempt at a restoration. I dont know what it is as it had already been repainted when I picked it up.
I stripped the frame to bare metal and repainted it, rebuilt the wheels with stainless spokes (Shimano large flange hubs, Ukai 27 x 1.25 alloy rims, new IRC gumwall tyres) fitted a Shimano 105 "Golden Arrow" groupset (salvaged from another bike heading for the dump) new cables, seat and bar tape. Many hours of polishing all the Alloy components cleaning and lubricating bearings etc has produced a nice result IMHO and all up it nows ways in at 12.4k

P.S. I know the pedals need touching up to finish it off!! I'll get around to it one day
