I'm up to 547.41 km of walking & running this year.

To this date on ...
May 2017, I had done 491.75 km
May 2016, I had done 388.45 km
May 2015, I had done 371.90 km

I'm a bit surprised by my total this year but I've been walking every single day since March 19 ... mainly to and from the hospital with a bit of university walking thrown in. In other words, most of that has been transportational walking.

I can't tell you how far I went but spaghetti was at the halfway point of the journey :) And it was on Rosa. I can't wait to get Darla out of the shop with her new vintage venders too.

Machka 06-05-18 04:57 AM

As usual these days ... lots of walking back and forth to the Rehab Unit, walking back and forth to University, commute walking, grocery shopping, plus more.

"Car free" since March 22. :/

As of June 5 ...

2015 -- 445.85 km
2016 -- 436.35 km
2017 -- 550.75 km
2018 -- 640.87 km

It's been a while since I posted here! Today was "epic grocery run", which consisted of a quick ride up and down a hill, a stop at the store, and the ride home with stuff (mostly baked goods, because this particular store has a good bakery.) With the hill, it was a nice 13.9 mile ride :)

Dont have a car nor a drivers license so all I do is ride a bike or walk. Keeps me fit! Bicycle is a great invention!

indyfabz 06-20-18 02:12 PM

Walked 1.75 mile from home to work. Walked a few blocks to get lunch, a few more to get to a park and a few more to get back to the office.

Going to walk home with a stop at WF for dinner stuff.

Would have used the bike today but it's supposed to start raining around 5. Skies are really starting to cloud up. Bike got rained on a few times during my recent two-week tour so I want to give it a break.

To the wrong DMV

No car. Riding a slightly upgraded Schwinn S-25 full suspension with 2-inch wide Continental road slicks. Replaced the shifting for the bike to Shimano's Acera derailleurs and trigger shifters because the stock shifters were sketchy. Upgraded the suspension with a lockable/adjustable front fork and rear shock. Would not have done all of this except a friend practically gave it to me brand new for $50. The bike wasn't even dusty when he sold it to me. Not taking this thing offroad much or doing any of the crazy stuff people do on quality full suspension bikes, but it makes a great commuter for getting around Louisville, KY. Love the ride quality on it now. Going to put panniers on it and a front basket and try doing Instacart deliveries with it. Started out as just a backup for getting around on foot, but as I've ridden it more I've gotten into the whole riding thing. Way faster to get around versus walking and a lot more fun.

Anyway, rode it 5.5 miles roundtrip to the Fairdale DMV today to get the address on my driver's license changed to my new address. (No car, but I have a roommate who'll let me borrow his car if I really need it.) Got there and they told me they didn't do address changes at that DMV.

To June 2018 -- 725.57 km
To June 2017 -- 597.35 km
To June 2016 -- 512.12 km
To June 2015 -- 502.15 km

"Car free" for the past 100 days.

Turns out I've got severe arthritis in my right foot and moderate arthritis in my left foot. I'm hoping to see a podiatrist soon. No shoes are comfortable and every step hurts. But nevertheless, I need to walk ... it's how I get around. I'm not sure that any of the 110 km I've done this month have been "recreational". I think they've all been "utility" walking.

I've given up on running for the time being ... until a podiatrist checks things out.

I'm just hoping that something can be done to make it feel a bit more comfortable and less like I'm walking on broken glass.

The idea that it could be better occurred to me when I got a good pair of running shoes for the 10K run I did in January. The shop had me walk up and down, checked my gait and everything, and recommended a good pair of shoes. I was able to run and not spend the rest of the day hobbling around. Those are still my best pair of shoes.

At the time, they said I might need orthotics, so I was going to follow up with that when Rowan had his accident, and all thought of my own issues went out of my head for a while.

And then I logged a lot of kilometres walking over the next 3 months!

Now that things are improving for Rowan, I figured I'd finally get my poor aching feet checked. :)

Machka 07-06-18 10:38 PM

Car free for 108 days ... 3.5 months.

And up to 734.57 km of walking this year. Not as much walking this past week now that Rowan's home, but still mostly utility walking.

Oh, and Rowan's been for 3 walks this week as well. :)

You often inspire me Machka. I haven't been riding as much as I used to since my operation and bout with Plantar Fasciitis. But I do get in a few miles on the MTB and so far this year I have walked 547.2 miles.

Crash

Went down and fractured an elbow. Riding tired in unfamiliar territory too fast without pads. Let that be a lesson to me.

Car-free gravelbiking!

I met up with a small group for a casual (but brutal and long) gravel ride. The nearby gravel rides tend to start in small rural communities in SE MN, 10-15 miles from my house, and I discovered that it doesn't take all that long to ride over there. It's kind of fun to mix transpo and recreational riding into one great big ride (even if it means getting up a bit earlier than if I were to get a lift from another rider.)

Walked ... to the podiatrist and back!

50PlusCycling 07-14-18 02:06 AM

I rode my bicycle across town to renew my drivers license. I live in Roppongi, so I had a nice commute down toward Shimbashi, then cut toward Hibiya Park, and cross Uchiboridori (inside the moat road) in front of the Imperial Palace, formerly Edo Castle. I rode across Otemachi (Big Hand Down) to Nihonbashi and the renewal center.

As it was my third license renewal with no tickets or accidents (knocks on wood), I finally got a "gold" license, and can now get a discount on my car insurance.

As of a year ago, we have one of those on a main street in my neighborhood.

Fortunately, it's a small (single lane) roundabout. On a bike, I can usually squeak in and then ramp it up or draft a car until it's time to leave. On foot, I try to avoid it.

Machka 07-24-18 03:48 AM

We have lots of roundabouts in our area ... they're not difficult to walk across and are even easier to negotiate by bicycle. I was so relieved when they decided to put a new one in at the end of our street.

There are only 2 in our area which are a little hair raising.

Machka 08-17-18 08:24 AM

Still lots and lots of errand walking.

Today, I hiked up to a hardware store and picked up a folding table for Rowan to use when he rides his trainer ... to hold the computer with Zwift. :)

I walked back to work with it, then to the bus, then from the bus home!

Fortunately it was reasonably light ... for a folding table .. with a steel frame.

Besides my usual bike commute to work, I put in nearly two hours today taking residents for rides on this. It's a duet bike, made in Holland. The chair disconnects from the rear cycle part so I can pick up and deiver residents right from their rooms. 7sp Nexus IGH. For short rides I go around our courtyard (it's pretty big), long rides along various pathways around the facility (11acres) and longer still rides to and around a nearby lake.
