SOLD!!! 1982 21" Trek 720 frame FS or trade for Raleigh Competition frame

SOLD!!

1982 21" Trek 720 frame, fork headset and rack. Also looking for a 23 1/2 early 70's Raleigh Competition frame as a long shot trade...

Bike has 2 small dents, one on top tube and one on bottom of the down tube and a deformed cable holder. The paint has plenty of chips scratched and rubs, but no rust. Comes with Blackburn rear rack.

This is the caliper brake version, which makes it a good candidate for a 650b conversion.

Additional pictures here: Trek 720

Frame will be fully pipe wrapped and will ship in a proper frame box.

can you tell me what the seat tube and top tube measurements are ? is it an actual 21 inches or is it slightly larger in the seat tube ?

bark_eater 03-19-19 08:04 AM

Looks to be 53 cm square. Seat tube is 51.5 cm center to center.

So slightly smaller than 21"

SamSpade1941 03-19-19 09:28 AM

Thank you ... that will end up being too small for me ..

good of luck with sale ... someone will be getting a gem

bark_eater 03-19-19 09:47 AM

Thanks for the interest. The next size up measures out to 22.5 inches square (I think?)

Do you have pics of the dents? Also, how deformed is the cable holder...looks ok from the pictures.

Thanks, can barely notice them in the pics. Tempting, but got too many projects right now. GLWS.

How is this even still here? If I didn't already have a 720, this would have been gone 2 months ago...

It is a 21". A 1985 720 frame in size 22.5" sold for $400 on ebay (shipping included). At the same time a complete 83 size 24" with a travel case went unsold at $450 + $150 for shipping. It was relisted at $400 and sold for $425. Note that the travel case is normally listed for about $200 on ebay.

It's not so much what the bike generally sells for, it's what the bike actually IS.

I personally think the 85 model frame is the 'ultimate' 720. Of course, I'm biased as I ride a 21" and have a 21" 85 720.

HOWEVER, this is the one year of the 720 without canti studs. Which, in terms of today's line of thinking, this is the one bike that'll easily be converted to 650Bs. This is the only year and model of bike with a full 531/531 frame without canti studs with 47cm chainstays. Add in the early barn Trek 'mystique' and that's what makes this bike so appealing.

Maybe it's true that the touring bike "craze" is over- but it seems the 650B/wide tire thing is still in full effect, hence my surprise that this bike hasn't sold.

If there are trends or crazes involved with owning/riding C&V bikes today, I’m glad I’m unaware of them. As for not running with Cantu brakes, a 650B builds seem pretty right on, and I’ll mention too that a 700c conversation utilizing quality sidepull calipers & pads is in my opinion nothing to sneeze at either. In fact, if I hadn’t just finished such a build & was looking for a kick ass frame to start one with, for relaxed riding & the ability to tour, I’d be trying to procure this Trek myself.

I’m scratching my head too... why hasn’t this frame sold?

Wow really still for sale? How big of a tire on a 700c wheel do you think would fit?

bark_eater 11-11-19 11:26 AM

Haven't tried. Plenty of room with 27x1.25 tires though.

It will likely top out at 32c and maybe a 35. I'm running 32c with fenders on mine but it's tight.

Seriously, you people should be ashamed of yourselves. Can't find one in my size, but nobody will buy this one.
