Lemond Team Club for a Song

It's not pretty but I have been looking for one of these for a while and when this one popped up on CL...well?
The photos on the site were not the best and it appeared a little rough, I could see that the rear stays had a primer on them but the price of admission was somewhat reasonable so I thought that I would take a look-see.

When I arrived to look at the bike it was a little nicer than I expected (not mint by any means), mostly original components with the exception of the wheels and seat. The tires were new and the wheels had little to no brake wear.
It had Modolo brakes, Triomphe FD and RD...cranks original etc.

I did the usual check of the tubes and fork for damage and found none, the frame was straight and the rear stays were done correctly as far as I could tell. When I checked the seat post it was stuck and when moving on to the stem that was stuck as well....bad news.
I talked to the owner about these issues and he just wanted to get it out of his way, we struck a deal based on the potential issues that I would/could be confronting...needless to say it went home with me.

Service will start after a good soaking with PB Blaster in order to free up (hopefully) the SP and S, after that a full grease service...then paint prep the RS and touch-up paint after it stops raining in sunny So-Cal.

For the rebuild, I am planning on going with an all campy set-up.
Progress pics to follow.

Best, Ben

TL needing a lot of TLC.

That's a great score. Something tells me you'll overcome a little bad news and have a really nice riding bike from a respected mark. Cheers!

I wonder if this is the same that was on offerup earlier this year for a heckuva price.

Either way I saw this one on CL too and thought of getting it but I had the Bianchi on deck to build. Nice buy Ben.

Miguel,
Not sure if it was the same one on offer-up, if so I missed it...it's too small for you and anyway it would not meet your standards.:innocent:

I absolutely love those. Nice grab!

I am not familiar with this model, but I sure do like the 2 Lemonds that I have, Poprad and Tourmalet. The tourmalet was in really rough shape when I purchased it, but it cleaned up nicely. I did strip it down to bare metal and had it powder coated. The fit is just about as close to perfect for me as I could hope for in a production bike. What tubing is used on the Team Lemond Club? I hope the rebuilding process goes well for you, and I look forward to future pictures.

You did alright Ben :thumb:

Love the bike and color combo !!!

I have had bikes ( we all have) with stuck seat posts and bar posts.

Success was obtained on ALL but one. It was a seat post with ridges.

Just be patient and have ample supply of PB Blaster !!!

Good Luck and congrats on a great score !!!

The rear stays will need some sanding and paint but all seems square.

SP and S are soaking...will see what happens in the AM....for now I need to patch my roof, Who said it never rains in California?

I wonder if the DO were replaced?

xiaoman1 03-23-20 03:26 PM

Could be but I don' see why...what would cause you to ask the question?
There is no frame damage.

Ben

I imagine looking for a reason for the primer.
Anyway it looks good now. Enjoy.

Congrats Ben! My buddy down there was planning on getting that a couple of weeks ago but he had just purchased a Molteni Merckx so he passed.
Looking forward to the build.

The position of those bars makes my back hurt just looking at them... :50:

Yeah me too, but I am not always in the drops and have a long torso, so Lemonds fit me well....I have a little Zurich with 853 so I am curious how this one will ride, The tubing is TRITUBI so it's a bit heavy. :p

Had me curious about the install on the drops both front and rear have the same markings so if it was done it was with original drops and the rears look well done, so......

After a lot of soaking, I finally got the seat post and gooseneck out.
When the wind stops I will finish painting the drops..I have a few secrets that I use to blend the paint that involve the way I mask the areas not to be painted....:Dhttps://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...231c69f7ae.jpg
PB to the rescue!

Seat-post was really frozen and so was the stem

No bike riding in L.A. beaches were closed today. :(

The wind has died down and I applied a coat of paint on the stays.
If you notice, I never use a hard edge to mask the area to be painted. I find it much easier to "blend the paint in using this type of masking.
I use the hard edge at the top and crumple up the paper at the blending side and spray down over the crumpled paper in order to create a more feathered paint edge...never spraying upwards.
This technique has helped me blend the paint in without a lot of sanding and polishing and often helps hide the fact that the paint is not an exact match of the original....works well with metallics as well.
The trick is also to use light coats at first with no overspray and then to finish off with 2 or 3 heavier on to push the gloss levels up.

Spray downwards
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5ca7c852f5.jpg
Spray away from the paper and downwards
I'll post after the paint dries better..no need to rush.:D

Bikemike,
I normally use Krylon but with a limited amount of choices I resorted to Rustoleum....please remember to spray away from the mask and leave the paper loose at the bottom edge.
I will post after it dries a bit.

I finally got around to pulling off the masking and think it turned out well for the rattle can job... I find that loose masking and spraying "down" works well.

After I clean these I will most likely put this group on the frame....misplaced the brake set but will be using Campy monoplane, if I can find them :p

Clean and detail seat post and place an order for some yellow bar tape next.
