wide feet, pedal extenders or wider pedals (platform)
 

I use platform pedals w mini toe clips (no straps). the pedals do not extend far enough outward to support my entire foot width. any thoughts on pedal extenders vs wider platform pedals? want to continue to use the mini clips so wider pedals w/o holes to attach them won't work for me. been thinking about it now cuz I have a size 13 shoe & lately been wearing a roomy walking shoe w rubber covers so the shoe is a bit wider. here's a pic of one set of pedals to provide an idea of much wider I might need

I don't have a particular product in mind that would fill the bill, but how about using the clip/reflector mounting holes to attach a longer piece of metal, serrated on the working edge, to each pedal side? They could be mounted slightly outboard so as to avoid rubbing on the crank. Know anyone who works in a metal shop? Of course welding the pieces on is a possibility as well.

They are available in 21mm and 27.5mm lengths, with 9/16" threading on both ends.

They also have a version for using 9/16" pedals in 1/2" threaded cranks.

My wife has bad hip joints and needed wider pedal spacing. Extenders work fine for her.

Actually, as the OP's complaint is partly the width of the pedal itself, a pedal such as that pictured above may be a good alternative.

I would not call those "platform" pedals, but perhaps bear-traps. The vertical metal all around will surely cut into your shoes/feet, while an actual platform would disperse foot pressure.

I would consider these pedal extenders, they're hollow with a hex opening at the back, made in america, prettier, and about the same price (perhaps cheaper, depending on amazon shipping).

I would also get some real platform pedals, I am quite happy with Wellgo MG-1 and MG-2, I got a pair of each from eBay for about $20/ea (although currently it looks like their going for more like $40)

PS is that shoe actually called "Tingley"? That must be how your feet end up feeling after a short ride in that setup!

Actually, their products are quite de rigueur in a number of clubs on the lower east side.

Actually, after looking at the photo you posted with your boot bottom on the peddle
it does not appear to be much wider then the peddle itself. Once you consider that 13
is a length measurement, it's the letters that designate width. Once you get to the 3E
designation you start to find problems getting something that looks nice and fits comfortably.
I know as I have 4E feet in the same 13 length. As a reference, I can overlap the edges
of a 9" square floor tile, sideways, when I put my feet together with just my socks on.
As is, I get along just fine with "Normal" stock peddles.
When I saw your photo I saw that there is only a minor amount of overlap. That can
be normal as there is a border around the outside of the shoe where there is no foot.
If you were to place your sock covered foot on top of the peddle, does your actual foot
overlap the peddle? If not then I wouldn't worry about it.

Well, platform pedals for sure to distribute pedal pressure evenly around the foot. Extenders only if you have out-turned duckfeet like me, and your heels are always hitting the cranks or the chainstays (or you twist your feet out to be like normal people, and get IT band pain)

I don't have turned out feet but I do sometimes (rarely) have heel strike. this winter my left knee has been acting up. haven't fully diagnosed it yet

My favorite pedal. I've got two pairs and need to buy two more for my current builds. I match these with large plastic Zefal half-clips. These work perfectly with my old Shimano Mtn bike shoes. Now all I need is a NOS pair of these shoes as mine are 15 years old.

Another vote for MKS Sylvan Touring. I wear size 13 shoes and these work very well. Grip is really good to.

These are my choice, and I see no need for any toe-clips the way these things stick to your shoes. :thumb:
