Is this bike worth it?

Hi you guys. For the moment, I live in San Jose. I've been looking at bikes to use for commuting and exercise. My budget is around 300 bucks.

Hi I bought 2 vilano shadows and got them last week (took a week to arrive, for myself and s.o.), I'm still to write up a review here, in short it's ok, but they do cut corners, e.g. rim strip is rubber like on kid's bikes, definitely has to be replaced with proper rim tape or at least duct tape; every bolt has to be checked and many tightened; all brakes and derailleurs had to be adjusted. All done in a couple of nights with helpful info on youtube. I like it overall it's fast and easy on the eyes. Considering that I already spent a 100 in local bull^H^H^H^H bike shop and walmart for lock, essential tools, grease, pump, gage, new tubes, etc; you gotta factor that into the cost your purchase. Unless you already have all the accessories.

Thanks for your input. I never considered the accessories cost.

Do your research by Googling "Vilano bike" and "Vilano bike review" and things like that.

Have you ever heard of Vilano? Neither have I. It is not a real manufacturer (direct sales only, buys frames from someone else and puts on a sticker, no dealer network or support). Based on the review above, it sounds like junk at best and a death trap at worst. I suspect that bike never actually sold at the MSRP listed (this is just a tool to make it sound like a good deal). Why not spend the money on a decent used bike instead? Or support your local bike shop. You are going to love riding more and stick with it if you have a better, more reliable bike. Good luck.

Try a Wellington? bikesdirect.com has some in that price range -- the owner or a sales guy has been a regular here, and several members have them

+1 on the BD bikes. I have a Fantom CX and it is a great bike for the $$, but out of your budget.
