How narrow of a tire will my rims go?

I just bought my first MTB, a 2018 GT pantera comp. I've been road biking for a while but i'm new to the MTB side. I'd like to get a second set of tires or a whole second wheelset to use for paved bike trail riding. The specs show that the internal rim width is 35 mm or 1.38". If I wanted to keep this wheelset for more of a paved road friendly tire set, what is the minimum tire width that I could use?

If I do decide to go with a second wheelset for some narrower tires, what specs do I need to ensure I can mount disc brakes to the hubs?

35mm internal rims are pretty wide for the road. I'd suggest getting a second set at about 25mm or narrower for faster tires. The hubs just need to be disc ready to accommodate rotors. Just make sure the spacing matches what you currently have on the GT. Also easier to have a full wheelset with a cassette so you don't need to swap it out each time. Note there are SRAM style XD hubs which aren't compatible with 10 spd systems if that's what you have.

Bear in mind that if you go to really skinny tires, your bottom bracket (ergo, cranks and pedals) will drop a bunch.

Panaracer has a few gravel/urban tires in 650x48B that should do the trick. I don't think I'd go any skinnier on that bike, and there's no reason to.

I have a 9 spd rear cassette on this bike, I'd need to get a shimano style rear hub. This bike has thru axles. Is it easy to convert a wheelset with quick releases to use thru axles? I'd be looking at something like this:

There are a few different thru axle standards.

Front wheel Might be 15x100 or 15x110 (Boost).

Rear could be 12x148mm (Boost... most likely) or 12x142 (unlikely) or 12x157 (Super Boost... not sure how widespread this has become).

How easy it is to convert one axle type to another depends on the hub in question, though most manufacturers are making it easier these days due to the reality that a new axle standard comes out every three months.

I don't think it's worth the axle change. And not all hubs allow this. Just noticed the bike is 27.5+ so I'd considet getting 29" wheels instead or even 700c as they are the same size. Look in the used market there's lots out there for under $100 for thru axle. I'm guessing it's 100x15 and 142x12, but check to be sure.

Yeah, I'd like to get a wheel set with hubs made for thru axles. Would you recommend some lower prices 700/29er wheelsets that have thru axle hubs? I do not want to switch from quick release to thru axles on this bike. I'd prefer to keep using the thru axles that I have on the bike. I'll measure the length and diameters when I have a chance.

That's a plus sized bike. You can't go much narrower than a 27.5x2.4 on those wheels. What's best is to find a 29er wheelset and you'll be able to run 29x2.0 without messing up the bb height. The hubs you need are front 15x110 and rear is Boost 141 which is a QR boost hub

Just ride your bike. If you need to go that much faster or get the heart rate up, get a road bike.

I want this bike to serve as a commuter on rare occasions and the slow rider w/ my gf and family AND to use on trails as a mountain bike. It's hard to ride my road bike at a slow speed with them. My Panaracer Fat B Nimble tires are pretty loud when riding on paved trails and streets. They're great on trails and in the mud! This is why I'd like a second wheelset with different tires.

Hey, I can relate. This is what I use for my short (3.7 mi one way) commute. If you wanted to go a lot further... well, I still think a road bike. Old road bikes stay good for a quite a while but don’t cost much. The one I have, I think would cost about $200 on craigslist. That’s way less than a wheel set and a pair of tires
