Bob Jackson

I am curious about what others think about this Bob Jackson touring bike. It looks to be in very good shape, but I think it is a bit overpriced, $750.00. I really do not have much knowledge about the value of older bikes, I am just going by what I see other similar bikes going for. The C & V category does not seem to be very strong here in Delaware, but maybe a bit more in the northern area, closer to Philadelphia and NJ. The bike has been listed for 30 days and the seller tells me he has had some interest but no offers. About a 2 hour drive from me.Thanks for any info. https://delaware.craigslist.org/https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d0d4c48f55.jpg

I like the looks

Looks like a pretty nice bike in good shape. Price might be high, but I don't think it's crazy. I'd see if I could get it for $500.

Agreed. Nice bikes and nicely made, but that one is an odd size so make sure it fits you. Also has some unusual components on it - not bas, but a little eclectic. Value there is in the frame and DA hubs. I'd go $500 in this market, but not much further, especially since he hasn't had any offers in 30 days.

....I actually have a Bob Jackson super tourist here. I think it's probably priced about right, for the lower prices of today and the condition as discernible from a photo. If I wanted one, and it was exactly the right size for me and the paint was good, assuming the wheels are well built and in good shape, I'd pay that or close. That's not crazy high for where I live. I bought mine, here, for about $600, but have since spent considerably more on mechanical improvements.

Vintage British high end bikes tend to command a premium. I've been looking for one for a while on and off and I've been keeping an eye on the prices. That's more than I'd want to spend but it's not a crazy price. I'd consider it if it were my size but I'd certainly want to pay less than $750 which is more of an eBay price than a CL price. I'd offer $500 and be willing to move up if the Seller is willing to bargain.

One thing to keep in mind regarding Bob Jackson, JRJ and Merlin (steel) badged framesets it that only some were produced in house.

Many were done by cottage industry builders in the surrounding area and delivered to the Jackson facility in bare metal for painting and transfers.

It is entirely possible that one of these contracted frames might be nicer than an in house produced one.

Do not know if there are any details which might decode the difference.

I have never heard this before. Can you tell us how you know this?

Bob Jackson made a trip to the U.S. at the beginning of "the boom."

When he saw what was going on he could not get home fast enough to get started with the contract building.

Information comes from long time Bob Jackson authorized dealer.

I have decided to pass on this bike. Not crazy about the mix of components, but the real breaker is the geometry of the frame. The short seat tube is not going to work for me. Thanks for the input from everyone.

Sounds like an unsubstantiated rumor to me. There are a lot of those in the bike world. In this case I think it's backwards, as JRJ was building frames for other brands such at Hetchins, at least for a while.

I'm in Delaware pretty frequently now if anyone wants a facilitator. If I were a buyer, I'd be in at around 500, though I'd try to pay less. I don't think he's getting 750.

Edit - agree more with wrk - I think 500 is a stretch with the parts group, though they're perfectly functional. The issue with this bike is that it's not a special collector piece, or premium marquee frame...but, in terms of pure function, it's probably less desirable than a Miyata 1000, expedition, Odyssey, etc.

It does have a Brooks, nice seat post...
