This soooo tempting, and a gorgeous bike.

Is the rear tire clearance similar to the front? Any guesses on max tire size?

romperrr 10-24-23 09:33 AM

These are great riding bikes and this one is setup beautifully.

jeirvine 10-24-23 10:29 AM

Nice.
Remind me: were those built for 27" or 700c rims, in terms of brake setup.

bwilli88 10-24-23 10:41 AM

Built for 27" wheels but works well with 700c. Mine 83 and 81 both would take 42mm but could easily rub.
I have 700Cx38mm on my 81 at the rear and 700Cx45 on the front.
traded off my 83 for my Henry tandem and it had 38s

I think bwilli88 has it right. It will fit 38s easily on the rear. 42 looks like it would be tight.

Did you paint that yourself, Brent? Beautiful job in any case.

What is the FD. Cannot see it well enough. Cool combination of parts. Love XT rear derailleurs.

Yune_Garage 10-24-23 08:13 PM

This is a GREAT deal. Beautiful build!

bibliobob 10-24-23 08:52 PM

That's a beauty, and a square deal, fer sure....

Dfrost 10-25-23 12:22 AM

Another useful dimension would be seat post diameter, for those of us considering the F/F/HS/shifter option that seems like an absolutely screaming deal.

bwilli88 10-25-23 08:32 AM

Seat post is 27.2

EDIT I was wrong, it is a 27.0

Thanks! Yes I painted it.
Front derailleur is Suntour XC9000.

Seatpost is SR Laprade 27.0. Since this is a somewhat unusual size I will include it with any frame and fork sale. Thanks for mentioning this.
I'm also open to selling a partial bike. Example: You want the bike but already have your own racks, handlebar bag, and saddle or your own wheels, etc.
Brent

Edit: bwilli88 posted while I was typing. He may very well be correct about the original seatpost size, though the 27.0 post fits with no perceptible pinching of the lug ears.

Is this Tange Champion #2 tubing?

My 81 is, my 83 was stripped before I owned it.
And I was mistaken, the seat post is 27.0

BertoBerg 10-25-23 08:27 PM

What was the idea behind having two bottle cage mounts on the down tube and none on the seat tube?

What model of rims?

Thanks!

Alas, I'm afraid I'm not privy to Centurion's design decisions.
Rims are Velo Orange. I don't recall the model name. They are 22mm outside width.

In response to your earlier question about tubing the bike came to me missing large portions of the paint and decals including the tubing decal.

There was some convo about this recently in regards to the 1983 Trek 720, I was curious as well. Turns out that the mounts underneath the downtube were actually there to carry fuel canisters. The Specialized Expedition had 3 I believe in 1983 and everyone else started catching up in 1984.

bwilli88 10-26-23 08:31 AM

No water bottle mounts on the seat tube were probably to put a tire pump there.

Lamont Cobb 10-26-23 03:45 PM

I would be tempted but wrong size.

BertoBerg 10-28-23 09:12 AM

Who is this still here to tempt me?!

Mine rides really sweet, jump in headlong feet first and buy this. Great deal and bike.

Are you willing to sell it without the racks and bag? I have my own already.
