Cateye Stealth vs. Garmin 500
 

Hey everyone.

What do you think of the new Cateye's that are coming out? The Stealth 50 + 10 are both GPS enabled.

My road bike was stolen with my cycling computer on it. I have a new bike and desperately need a cycling computer. I am wondering if I should hold out for one of these Cateyes or just go with a Garmin. I really don't like how large the Garmins are. They just look weird on steel bikes.

Price-wise, the Cateye is cheaper. Feature-wise the Garmin 500 has more. Its what you need.

as far as the unit size. Just consider that appearances aren't much of a concern especially when you're riding. Next time, watch the professional riders at the Grand Tours, except for the Garmin-Slipstream team.

There are two levels of Cateye Stealth; the 10 is stand alone, the 50 has ANT+ capability so can be used with, say a HRM or cadence device.

Since they are not yet available who is to say how good they are? I can tell you what I think ...

The Garmin is good. The Cateye Stealth features is all you can go by. Feature comparison says the Garmin has more.

For whatever reasons, Cateye made the decision to price their Stealths commensurate with the features and Garmin would have been their primary comparison.

I ended up picking a Garmin up on my way home from work last week. The Garmin 500. I am pretty impressed. I;ve took it on a few rides and I really love how it syncs up with Strava. I look forward to picking up a cadence sensor and a heart monitor so I can geek out on all of the data.

I checked out the Cateye at the Las Vegas show in Sept of 2012. But I still bought the Garmin 500, sensor, monitor.

I don't want a cadence sensor or heart monitor. I just want a good GPS that's easy to use and will get me from point A to point B. I've got a Garmin GSmap 60Cx, but the damned thing is a pain in the arse to program and is about equal in size and weight to a brick.

What should I buy?

I ended up with the Garmin 500 and I like it so far.

If the Cateye units have fast satellite acquisition, they will certainly give the Garmin Edge 200 a run for it's money. I've been holding off on the Garmin due to the fixed sample speed (5 seconds) and the hassle of setting the initial odometer value (heard you have to somehow get the software dev kit and mess with unpacking and repacking a file). The Cateye has programmable sample speed and odometer. The base model is cheaper than the Garmin 200 or for around the same price as the 200 you can get the Stealth 50 with ANT+. I think Cateye may have been listening to the complaints about the 200. Now the 200 does have very fast acquisition speed from what I've read. Remains to be seem if the Cateye will or not.

ETA: I see the Stealth 10 in stock now at several places.
Still keeping an eye out for reviews.

All my friends swear by the 500 and I will be getting one soon. This is actually a pretty small unit. Check out this review for a comparison of size amongst the many available today and you'll see the 500 is pretty svelte:

I was waiting on the Stealth but PBK put the Edge on sale last week so I went ahead with it instead. The Cateye release date came and went with none hitting the shelves.

I have a Stealth 50 and am impressed with it. Clearly there are features that the Garmin has, that the Stealth does not, but you would expect that.



the unit performs well, the display is very good. I do not understand people talking about the "clunkieness" of holding down the mode button to save a trip, this is exactly the same as resetting the Garmin in order to save a ride track, just a different button.



my only complaint with theStealth actually is the proprietary cable/sled for downloading and charging. Of course this means you can't use any of your other cables, but the sled is what makes the whole unit water proof.

Still thinking the same thing. Garmin has bigger, configurable display & more features. Cateye Stealth is considerably cheaper especially if you catch it on sale. I'm happy with my Stealth 50 + HR strap combo, I got both for ~$160. No issues besides the strap failing; Cateye sent me a new one.
