Anybody wheel their bike over new Long Beach bridge?
 

It looks like there is a dedicated bike lane on the ocean facing side. I’m wondering how you get on from Wilmington/Terminal Island...

There were good intentions in building a bike lane on the bridge, but why would anyone working in that area want to ride up-and-over using the bridge, much less through the neighborhoods at either end of the bridge?. Nothing on either side. It might be cool to take a bike up there are do some 'laps' back and forth over the bridge for a workout, but I'm not riding over to it.

I checked with a friend this weekend and learned a little bit about it... for those not "in the know" the bike lane is 2-way but only on 1 side of the bridge. There is a concrete barrier between the bike path and the cars.

I'd have to agree with skidder. I will do it once just to say I have, but I don't see any advantage in using that route due to the neighborhoods and roads on either side of it.

I know there is currently no good way to ride from San Pedro to LBC... I was hoping this might be the start of something big!

rode the palos verdes peninsula/sw san pedro route with the usual john, harry and anaheim thru wilmington enroute to long beach recently. by the time i got to climbing up the
710 fwy on/offramp bridge heading east to long beach, any positive peevee vibes picked up riding the peninsula were gone. that said, there are some pretty cool/interesting
things to see in progress cycling past/along one of the busiest ports in the world.

I work on the waterfront. I would never ride a bicycle on terminal island. At least not your definition- like if I was buying a bike from a coworker, I might take a spin in the parking lot.

But to actually ride the streets of terminal island? I don’t want to get run over.

There are no bike lanes on the Vincent Thomas. There are no bike lanes on the draw bridge replacement. So you aren’t getting through TI without being in grave danger.

Many of the details of the path on the bridge were proposed by Mark Bixby. He passed away in a plane crash in 2011. First time I rode the NYR Day bunch ride in 2010 he was leading the ride. With hundreds of riders present he was a strong leader.

I noticed him several times on Wed. mornings when he was returning from Velo Allegro rides.
Guy was unforgettable and was all the best of Socal riding.

Mark Bixby being the impetus behind bike lanes on the bridge isn’t relevant to whether it’s worth it to ride a bike on Terminal Island or not.

But I guess he was good at getting his way? Just because you can delay the building of a bridge with a fight over bike lanes, doesn’t mean you should. Just because you can stuff 3 more friends into a King Air, doesn’t mean you should.

Maybe those 2 ideas are related?

Has anyone ridden it yet? I don't think it is open yet but I am looking forward to it. I used to commute from Redondo Beach to Long Beach via Lomita-Figeuroa-Anaheim-Redondo Ave and had a great time. The Truckers are more bike friendly than SUVs and Moms in Manhattan Beach. Looking for info, I found this: Pretty cool.

Interesting. The bridge actually has it's own website with live streaming cameras. I'm looking as close as I can and I don't see any bikes. Also, there doesn't appear to be a lot of options as to where you get on or off (exit N or S).

It’s a public works project. That means it’s destined to be over budget, behind schedule, and disappointing to a good section of the users.

If you’re into that sort of thing, might be worth riding up to watch the old bridge demo.

Depending on how it’s done, might be a lot of carbon air arc and air lancing being done.

Look like insane and extremely noisy sparklers.

It was difficult to find out what is happening. I believe that a good bike way to get from the bridge to Ocean Blvd. is in the works and when that is done the bike lane will open.

It is exceptionally hard to find any information. My only 2nd hand information if from a riding buddy who goes down and checks it out about ever 2 or 3 weeks. For some reason I don't think it will be opening anytime soon. I subscribe to a newsletter from our local councilwomen and I'm sure she'll be touting the new "bike lane" as soon as it's open.

I got a response to my email...."The Mark Bixby memorial bike and pedestrian path is not yet open. Bridge builders are still using it for access for some finalization projects on the bridge’s main span. The opening date for the path is still to be determined.

We look forward to opening it up, and letting everyone know the best access routes."

A friend of mine was a civil engineer for the bridge and he was telling me that they cannot demo the old bridge in a dramatic or normal way. There is so much lead, asbestos, and other harmful agents in the old bridge that they need to take it apart in pieces and remove them by ship/truck. No fun demo to watch and the process is going to be slow he says.

Growing up in the South Bay, I have always wanted to ride over the bridges. The views from the new bridge are amazing!!!

They are! But I’m always driving so I can’t look to much.
I think they close the VT once a year for a run?
That might be the time for the views. Maybe take a camera or at least snap pictures with phone.

tried. denied. hopefully by the summer months.

I just got another email from them about a week ago but unfortunately I cannot seem to find it. I don't remember the exact words but there was not too much hope that it will be completed this year. I'm hoping for 2023. They mentioned that the path on the bridge is actually done, it's the connecting roads to the bridge that are not done and might take another year. They did ensure me that there would be a lot of fanfare when it is completed and it should be highly publicized.

How do you even get to it from the LA River? Ocean Blvd?
