Does the cable travel enough that the flattened area causes the problem your experiencing?

Oh it wouldn't have been just a chip. Some of the rocks getting tossed around were golf ball size. There was quite a variety including sections of loose very large pebbles up to 2.5 inches or so. We had a good pack moving at high speed and rocks were flyin' when we hit the downhills and sprint sections. It's also possible it came from my front tire but ballistics have so far been indeterminate.

That’s why I like my cables to run along the top tube. Protected and out of the way. Mechanicals suck, sorry it ruined/ changed your event!

to answer your question though, my Axis is too new to me to have issues and for the month I have had it, I still am changing things around.

I'd say that's a pretty safe bet. Funny enough my Tamland is a mixture of brake lines internally through the frame and shift cables under the BB. My wife's Renegade is full housing from start to finish. Having experience with both now I can see why full housing for gravel bikes that constantly get dirty is a good design choice. My Tamland is constantly squeaking with every shift because the dirt gets in the cable guide under the bb and makes the cable squeak, it's pretty annoying.
