black is okay, as long as there are a few colors to highlight the bike.
Of course, "few" is a relative term......

This paint scheme is by Shamrock Cycles and was on display at the NAHBS show in Louisville, KY in 2015. It won "best paint", and was reportedly a huge amount of work to mask off so many little color rectangles. Really beautiful, though!

Heinz Stuke used a paint marker on his black bike friday... stating where it's been.. with him..

I'm good with that. My carbon LOOK is fine, 'cuz it's shiny!

I love that. Not sure I'd want to own it, but I do like it. In fact I was at that show and remember seeing it. It was also where I met Dario Pegoretti. Now HE knew how to paint a bike! RIP Sir.

If Robocop had ridden a bike, it would have been flat black.

HA! Probably Batman too.

My complaint with black components is simply practical:
Anything that gets used is going to get a few scratches and/or light abrasion.
Scratch an aluminum/stainless-steel/titanium component with a natural finish, and it will be barely noticeable.
Scratch the identical part with a stupid black finish, and the natural bright metal will show through, making the scratch stand out like a sore thumb.

None of you carrying a piece of coloured chalk? :innocent: every matteblack surface is a blackboard, right??

u think that's bad? :o last Murdered Out overpaint job I did earlier this year, I used a new line of epoxy paint in contrasting textures of matte, satin & gloss... black.

Bike stripped & prepped. Paint went on fine, no dramas... but I didn't realise it needed 72hrs+ to fully cure :foo:

But I had deadline to meet, job needed rebuilding by 48hrs after final coats  nerve wracking rebuild that was, couldn't touch any painted areas...

haha last week I bought a bottle of nail varnish in matte black. Handy for touchups :thumb:

Actually, in wiping down the bike with a damp cloth I've found that is a good time to check maintenance issues such as a broken spoke, check for chain wear or anything else that may need attention.

TimothyH 11-06-18 12:10 PM

I like this better than the fancy Shamrock. :thumb:

Agreed. Earlier this summer I purchased an mtb with all flat black components (orange bike) and it shows dirt worse than any other bike I’ve owned. To make it worse, the matte finish holds onto the dirt better than a smooth finish making it harder to clean. Fortunately, dirt and scratches look more at home on a mountain bike than a road bike.

I've had plenty of sore thumbs that looked no different than regular thumbs.

That reminds me of something I read on a motorcycle forum:
- Get a red bike if you enjoy talking to cops.
- Get a black bike if you enjoy washing your bike.
- Get a white bike if you enjoy being mistaken for a cop.

I just think of the Partridge Family every time I see that pattern and colors on a Look Bike

Still, I want to say how much I don't like this trend of Flat or Satin black paint on the frame and worse yet...all the components. Everything a dull black. Looks horrible to me. There are plenty of examples on this forum but I don't wish to offend anyone. New bikes today are head and shoulders better than what most of us on this forum grew up with. But...I NEED SOME COLOR! And I want to see some Silver components as well.

Oh, AND GET OFF MY LAWN!

I totally agree. Besides black frames are burning hot in the summer and just not logical.

My black frame is not burning hot in the Summer. Go figure.

The correct two words would be:

Heat conductivity

The frames get no hotter than your black Lycra shorts. When your shorts start to feel uncomfortable, like at say 130 degrees F or so, maybe than call it a day.

This idea of all black frames getting hot to the touch is such a ludicrous concept,

TimothyH 11-13-18 11:05 PM

Burning hot frames LoL.

This place is great.

I certainly think so! While black on black would be boring, black and red is hot!
