Pink Trek
 

Just purchased this and went straight to the nearest quiet place to see what I got.

Took a few photos. I know a lot is not original but I like it. I took the toe straps off and aired the tires for a quick tour of the parking lot.

The triple with the 16 inch long chainstay may be an issue but for now I'll give it a bath, adjust the seat and bars and ride.

What's the serial number?

I think you got a gem. I am not Trek expert but I think those older pepto pink ones were upper crust. The calipers, shifters and HS may be original. You can check the serial on Vintage Trek and get the model and year

Perhaps a 1985 770? Made in Waterloo, WI. Very desirable and appears ready to go!

Bought it from a LBS that is closing soon. It was in the front window labeled Not For Sale and I’d been checking it out for the last several months. I’m tall and the frame fits me so no buyer’s remorse here.

+ 1. The '85 770 was pink with white decals. The serial number will tell the tale but you can see (barely) the series number on the top tube. This bike is hot.

Reynolds 531 tubing and investment cast lugs, fork crown, and bottom bracket. That's an old school way of building a bike (with all investment cast lugs, fork crown, and BB) and it makes for a fine build.

The serial number puts it at 1984, which is when the frame was made. It looks to have been sold as a 1985 Trek 770 as mentioned earlier.

It is most certainly a 1985 Trek 770. I had one for a few years. Passed it on to another BF forum member. Great bike.

Looks like Trek was trying to copy the Centurion paint schemes BITD.

I think Trek was leading the way on pink, BITD. An '85 Ironman had more conventional and staid red/white red/silver paint schemes, IIRC. The Miami Vice colors started for Centurion a few years later.

^^^^^ +1; and this is a single-color bike, whereas the Miami Vice IMs were typically multi-color. Different philosophies.

Yummy find, BTW. Even the modern saddle "works".

Seatpost and Stem TOO HIGH. Should each have a minimum 75-80mm (3") of insertion.

I've had my eye out for one of those pinkys for a while to go along with my pink and yellow IM and 1971 lavender Raleigh Competition!

Just echoing the chorus - you struck gold...this is one of the very few US production bikes I’d find room for. Love the color, great tubing...these are HAWT.

Sorry, I don't know the story on the Trek decals, but I like them better than the typical ones of that era. I bought the bike from a collector and the pink color is not original. It was originally an ugly metallic "rust-red." VAST improvement in my opinion. I don't collect bikes--I ride them, and this one suits me perfectly. Incredibly responsive with great turn-in, wonderful sprinting and hill climbing, though a little jarring on rough road surfaces like chip-seal.

Back to the original post--Great find and congrats!

The first bike in this thread is a 1985 Trek 770. It is one of Trek's all time high points--I know because I worked for a major Trek dealer straight through the 80's. Slightly twitchy criterium-is geometry. You want the ones built with standard Campagnolo or Japanese dropouts, not the Trek-specific dropouts and rear derailleur cable run through the chain stay--Trek did a poor job of this and they're not "class A" bikes with indexed shifting. The original version of the frame, back to another thread here, would be an excellent vintage frame to hang a modern group on. Pink and black--like SRAM Red 22 on one of those. I can tell you from personal experience that 770's are major fun to corner on!

1984 60 cm Trek 770, frame was born September 13, 1984.

Sometimes frames made late in the calendar year were finished ("livery" and equipment) to be sold in the next model year. I don't know what the thresholds were for 1984 builds versus 1985 builds.
