Saturday - Took the PDG Paramount out for a 65 mile ride in the morning. Still trying to lose weight so not fueling properly for these long rides. Got through it ok though with an avg speed of 17.9. Good enough I reckon....

Finally back on the bike after a long break. Took it real easy, didn't even produce a bead of sweat or touch the water bottle over 60km's. I had to sit most of the ride I had a pain in the back of the knee and if I stood on the pedals lost all strength. I'm going to need to build myself up over time which sucks as I was doing so well before I stopped riding. It was a nice day going by my photos but was absolutely freezing... well cold, I was well covered up all day.

Ventura to Carpinteria and back. Only 15 miles each way but it’s the first time since I’ve rediscovered cycling that I’ve ridden that far nonstop (meaning no city stoplights). Made it in under an hour!

Also the difference between a coastal headwind and tailwind is 2mph. On a largely flat route with no stops, 15.5mph there. 17.5mph back.

Warm Ride

Been too busy to ride lately only once a weekend. Road a 24 mile loop today after putting on new front truck brake shoes. Cooled off to 96 F by the time I got back.

Sunday - Went out for a lazy 50 mile bike ride. Didn't worry about pace but did stop a lot to take pictures. Today I was on the Gan GLX Lemond.

Friday: Upper Midwest heat wave and...my friend and I decided to go out for a late afternoon ride. It was in the 90s with a dewpoint of 80 when we started - normal in Alabama, not Wisconsin! We kept watch on our heart rates, took it easy on the climb, all good. 27.5 miles, 1,263', average speed about 3MPH lower than normal.

Sunday: Super fun gravel event with significant climbing (plus the ride to and from, for another ~20 miles.) I was planning to do my own thing, but realized that RWGPS updated their user interface, and I had no clue how to get the turn-by-turn navigation started. After riders started spreading out during the first climb, I found some dudes going at a good pace that also had navigation. Ended up being a fun group. 87.6 miles, 5,240'.

Saturday: 106 km from Ventura to Santa Barbara and back. About 734 feet of climbing. Nice tail wind and a quick stop in Carpinteria for coffee and cake. ;)

Sunday: 72 km from Camarillo down to PCH going past iconic Mugu Rock. Only about 300 meters of climbing, but strong headwind heading North on PCH. No coffee or cake today. :(

Felt really good last week, rode 50+ miles three days during the week, then took it a little easier over the weekend. 35 miles Saturday, 18 Sunday.

Yup, it's hot, but not as hot as this time last year. And as usual June was my heat acclimation month, while by July I'm actually enjoying the hot rides -- as long as I stay within my comfort zone.

This weekend I was back in the Ocala National Forest. I had kind of a bad experience on Saturday's ride. The particular road I was on has a nice wide outside lane, fairly light traffic (compared to a city) but is high speed. I got buzzed a lot. First by a semi on the way out. Then three separate times by pickup trucks pulling ATV in a trailer on the way back. I have to think most of these were intentional. They seemed to make a point of riding their passenger tires right on the white line. My knee jerk reaction is to conclude the ATV population does not like cyclist. Then to add further insult, about a mile from the end of the ride a car passes close and gives me the horn. Such sweet rural people. Sunday was better. I went on a quieter road and had no incidence. Both rides were around 32 miles.

I had planned to ride down to the Pinnacles and back but 13 miles from home got a flat; my 3rd in about a month after not having one for about a year and a half. Spare tube fixed it but didn't want to go out into the boonies with no cell service and no spare tube so headed back toward town via a different road and then over to San Juan Bautista the long way and back. 60 miles and about 1500ft. of climbing. 15.4MPH average.

Brilliant weekend of riding. 162k ride at the Tour de Whatcom. A nicely supported ride, great views, great people, and a beer thrown in at the end with the entry fee!

Sunday was an easy 65k just to spin the legs out after the ride. Good times.

Maybe they were in a hurry to get to church.

But, yeah, ATVs... keep in mind most ATV activities are inherently damaging to the environment. They're already inured to that reality. It's a small step to being dismissive of other folks who pursue other activities. (I speak as a redneck in recovery, looking back in embarrassment at my younger self and selfishness.)
