1st Desert ride, some red skin today
Been a while since I rode in real sun 1/2 finger gloves, 2 water bottles, 1/3 Gatorade in big one, 1 lemon ice cube in small one. I put spf 30 on ears & top of forearms . Varner to Mt View to Dillon (high desert) 1000 palms canyon loop (31.5 mi) Woke up this am, biceps felt weird, had a little sunburn from elbow up to jersey. Not bad, but noticable. Legs ok except just above socks a inch or so, calf area. Will add sunscreen there from now on . Found some spf 50, Gotta protect my baby soft Alaska skin :) |
Good for you. Enjoy it. I hope the wildfires in LA County don’t impact your wintering grounds with smoke and ash - right now satellite images show it blowing out to sea. Coincidently, I had to go meet with an elderly client today at his assisted living facility. He had a great big bandage on the top of his head. I asked him what happened - he had just had surgery to remove skin cancer. He just looked at me and said “always use sunscreen”. |
Thanks Yea Good advice, from experience. I know I’ve been using more sunscreen when here in the desert. |
Consider some sunscreen arm sleeves, I started using them about 3 yrs ago. They are comfy upto low 90s F for me
(and humidity never less than 50-60%) especially while moving and appear to have ~40-50 SPF ratings. You might also look into some of the neck covers that attach to the helmet and depending on how much hair you have a full coverage scalp (doo-rag) such as Halo or similar. I used to get tiger stripes on my scalp every summer before using a full scalp cover, which also helps with the sweat and is good down to the low 30s F in winter. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_s...d=UF7DIUFMX7PA There was a post by a dermatologist on his head cover gear which was a bit overboard but kept his entire head protected. Don't forget sunscreen on the face. |

Some helmet options are here: https://www.google.com/search?ei=F-3tW5OtC8KgzwLU-aOQDQ&q=bicycle+helmet+surround+sun+shades&oq=bicycle+helmet+surround+sun+shades&gs_l=psy-ab.3...16465.18125..20872...0.0..0.155.1005.2j6......0....1..gws-wiz.......0i71.5TPfzObojpA
If I rode in SoCal or adjacent states I would probably invest in one of these, ie DaBrim which has gotten favorable reviews. |
