Best Auto Hitch Rack for Tandem Bike?
There was a previous (2006) post/thread on this, so I'm thinking there may be more updated options.
Although I was able to carry my newly acquired tandem on a standard trunk mount rack, the wheels stuck out a bout a foot to 15" or so on each side on the vehicle. I decided to take side streets to get back because I thought it posed a hazard to other drivers. The weight distribution on the rack rails (about 14" apart) was also somewhat worrisome. I'm assuming standard, horizontal mount hitch racks would pose the same problem. So then, what's the solution for safely transporting this W I D E and heavy load? BTW, our bike has a rear cargo rack... Thanks in advance! |
Draftmaster works well for me.

I modified my trailer hitch mounted rack to accept our tandem with the front wheel removed, but it still sticks out.

After a 14 hr round trip, we had no issues, and have since done weekend local 1/2 hr drive trips to ride different areas. We are learning there is a method to loading and unloading and use a ratchet strap to stabilize side to side rocking that wouldn't normally occur with a half-bike. The folded rack is not an obstruction, and we leave it mounted on our Honda Civic. |

Two tandems on a Draftmaster. Tall, but not wide. |

Did you see the Draftmaster carrier in the Tandem Marketplace?

We've used a roof-mount ATOC Tandem Topper off and on for 20 years.

Did not. Thx. I need to transport just one. I was on their website and think their racks are for two or more bikes...
Best of luck! |
