MKM frame and forks
SOLD 19 Sep
This is a little weird but definitely demonstrates why making a "homage bike" or "reproduction bike"is a bad idea. PO took a perfectly good handmade British racing frame and stripped the paint and repainted and decaled it as a Pogliaghi! It's an MKM Dominator. Frame is 22 inch or 56 cm. I would rate it as nicer than say a comparable Raleigh Super Course but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and to my eye this one has been horribly painted. $75 plus shipping? https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d0d626a55b.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...dc8e1aa76a.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2bb714198b.jpg |

So how did you figure out it's an MKM?
|
I'd like to say it was all me but when I saw it I was able to "that ain't italian" and maybe it was British but that was it. T-Mar and Bertinjim and scarlson and juvela and unworth1 and a few others recognized it. I contacted the MKM website and gave them the sn 3878 and they confirmed it and confirmed it was built in 1976. Also said that as a plus it was upgraded with fastback seatstays which cost 3 pounds (about $16 US) extra bitd!

The main British MKM site is here: https://www.mkm-cycles.co.uk/ I have seen the frame in the metal and it has lovely craftmanship and an appalling re- paint.

I bought my 1973 MKM Dominator as a used frame in 1981, and the label said that its tubes, forks, and stays forks are 531DB. I believe the Super Courses have straight gauge 531 for their 3 frame tubes.
I had an Atala with a label that said 3 straight gauge 531 frame tubes, and I loved it, but the MKM is a sweeter ride. I attribute that to the double-butted steel, but that's just the most obvious difference. In any case, I expect your rebadged MKM is a sweeter ride than a Super Course, given the same components and wheels. |
I bought it because it was such a weird story and I just had to go look but if it were a 24 or 25 inch frame I'd have blown $20 on brazeons for DT shifters and $75 on powder coat and kept it.
|
Sorry all - my mistake
I got emailed about the size and something didn't seem right so I remeasured C to C and it's a 21 inch (54cm) frame. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...301a2e2be5.jpghttps://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...60c20e4004.jpg Apologies! Wesley |

I just checked the old ads and MKM made frames in 1/2 inch increments so might actually be 21.5in frame...
|
How long is the top tube?
|
WGB-
Maybe right both ways? Brits measured center to top. Italians, center to center. So, since it's an MKM, decaled as a Pogliaghi it must be a 56 cm, 54cm frame. |
Just adding photos of top tube measurements for posterity as sold.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2e2a7e7cb7.jpg Left side of tape is actually centered as shown in next photo https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8cbc8c9a56.jpg Tape https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2d0161dbea.jpg Apparently they went for longer top tube than seat tube. Next time I'll add the measurements properly since I have another small frame - a Brian Rourke, also 54cm IIRC. |

Those of us who are short and have relatively longer trunks and shorter legs than most cyclists really like 21" STs and 22" TTs.:) BTW, your frame's head tube is longer than my 21" frame's HT, so I think yours is 22" CTT.
You might market it for long trunk/short legs, though $75 for a full 531 frame that doesn't really need repainting is a great deal, IMO. |
PM Sent.

Sorry for any confusion but it sold on here on Sept 19th.

Personally, I thought the paint job was cool. Tear off the decals and go to town for October!
