WINDSOR Competiton...just bought it

From what I can see, with the exception of the dried out tires, it's as it was built...100% original right down to the very pliable, soft hoods. Shimano 600 groupo all around, with Campagnolo hubs! And to my surprise, a leather Kashimax Super Pro saddle.

Anyway, extremely light weight bike with beautiful components...including chrome lugs and dropouts. And what I thought was rust on the hubs was dirt. It came right off! The bike had been sitting in the original owners garage and not used for many years.

Oh...and I bought it for the mere price of...$65...:thumb:

Chrome is cleaning up quite nicely! And what I thought was rust on the hubs was only dirt and dust from sitting for so long.

Was scrolling through the initial pics and had a hunch it would clean up phenomenally. Great score.

Next best thing to having the actual Cinelli, and you don't have to worry so much about slight scratches :)

Love the 3-D head tube logo. And the wonky Shimano 600 headset, hopefully you have "the tool". I had a set but tossed them at some point, figuring "I'll never work on one of these stupid things again.". :(

Yeah I've been looking on and off for one of those tools as well. This Hozan tool is pricey but it works on these wonky headsets:

Cool looking bike. I really like the 70s era bikes with chrome socks and forks. Plus they tend to be very reasonably priced.

Beautiful bike and nice score.

There's a guy on Ebay making tools for those headsets. I got a pair awhile ago and they work fine.

Can't wait to see more of this.

Nice. My Frejus Tour de France was like that. Looked like a disaster, but was just 30 years of dust and crud floating out of the basement air. I have those same Shimano 600 levers on one of my bikes. Those hoods are sturdy. As for the special headset wrench, they come up frequently on eBay. Searching for "Shimano headset wrench" just now I saw several.

SpeedofLite 07-02-19 08:24 AM

Very nice!

horatio 07-02-19 08:31 AM

Sweet! Nice find. It sure cleaned up well.

FWIW, a standard (32mm?) HS wrench works just fine on these headsets. They're designed that way.

So do open jaw pliers! :innocent: I usually wrap the nut with cloth first.

They do but I find that the Hozan tool is incredibly useful not just for those HSs. YMMV.

Might be old enough to be from the Mexican company..

Fahrenheit531 07-02-19 11:01 AM

Tubing would be...?

Salamandrine 07-02-19 11:27 AM

That cleaned up well! Congratulations! It's a beauty. Windsor is one of my favorite marques from the late bike boom era.

I suppose this would have been a competitor to the Motobecane Grand Record, which was IIRC also 600 equipped in that later incarnations. Kind of hilarious that this Windsor has Campy Tipo hubs mixed in with the Shimano stuff...

Wait a sec, did you replace the old Grab-Ons with new ones? Where did you even find them?

According to factory specification from ACER-MEX tubeset is Columbus DB.

They do not specify whether SL, SP or mixed.

Thanks for posting Don Federico! :)

Ouch! I'd think those serrated jaws would really chew up the soft aluminum headset parts; that's why Shimano designed those scalloped wrenches in the first place, to minimize damage to the headset.

In any case, there's an outfilt based in Poland and selling on eBay (the same outfit making the dual-ended TA/Stronglight crank extractors) that has a reproduction scalloped wrench for those headsets. Reasonable price, too:

The Hozan tool works well and does not chew up these headsets. Still $9 for the right tool is a deal.

I'm thinking that's a Super Carrera? Circa about 1980? It has braze on cable guides. Windsor was a bit behind the curve on that, so IMO this is one of the later bikes. They were on their way out at least in the US market by this point.

Frame tubes were probably Tange DB. Anyone have a catalog?

I haven't replaced a thing! It's As Found and apparently taken care of when it was used.

Hi Roger. I haven't posted on here in years, so it's now on here and The Cabe.

Sweet! Gotta show photos to the spouse, time for her to spent time cleaning her Windsor.

I like the headset tool set-up.
