New to San Antonio
Hello.
I just moved from Philly to San Antonio and looking to learn some routes and learn more about the cycling infrastructure here. We had it great in Philly/Seattle/Portland. Now like takes me to San Antonio. Any cyclists live in San Antonio? |
Welcome to Texas and Bikeforums. There are several bike clubs in the San Antonio area: San Antonio Wheelmen, San Antonio Cycling Club and the Hill Country Bicycle Touring Club. I live in Houston. Check out the event calendar at Texbiker.net for bicycling in your area.

Now like takes me to San Antonio. Any cyclists live in San Antonio? There's some great riding on the county roads north of 1604, east and west of 281. Also, to the northwest along either side of I-10. No 'mountains', but lots of rolling hills. Some are brutish steep too. Lifetime Fitness organizes Saturday group rides from their facility at 1604/281 (the 'burbs') with A, B, and C groups 30/50 miles. They're well run with a good turnout. If you want to put in 20-miles and hangout, there is more of a cycling culture in the Broadway area. It's in town with local bike shops, good coffee, and beer gardens. Does that help? :) |
San Antonio Cycling Alliance has a FB page and posts rides for all the clubs in the area. In addition to the clubs listed above, Velo Valero and Air Force Cycling Team are both very active in the area.
Lots of loose dogs on the south side of town. Chipseal is everywhere! |

Welcome to SATX. My go to ride for 40-50 miles is north up Blanco Road past 1604 towards HWY 46. Sometimes through Stone Oak and TPC for some hill climbing. I often do hill repeats at Torceido loop as well. Happy to help if you have any other questions.

For the OP, if you've heading out April through Sept on a 40-miler. Start early, otherwise you've going to pushing the pedals in 110F+ heat index. And HYDRATE! |
