Anaheim to SD - your best route..?

hoping yall can share a good route from the Anaheim Transportation Station to the Santa Fe Depot in SD, without having to ride the 5 freeway from Las Pulgas to Harbor (done it before, not doing it again) and bypassing Camp Pendleton.

thanks in advance!

Are you saying you can’t or won’t go thru Camp Pendleton either? You could probably find a way out thru Corona down Temescal Cyn Rd, Lake Elsinore, Temecula, and Fallbrook to the 76 and then back to Oceanside. Other than that it’s either CP or I-5, or a boat.

so the last time i did this ride (this past september), we were told cyclists are no longer allowed to ride through CP, which is why we were forced to ride the 5-S.

eesh, thats too far East

I was hoping there was another way, but i guess not huh

You have to go to CP, main entrance at Harbor Dr. and get a pass, good for a year. Need to take a real ID. They have info on their website. Personally I just ride I-5. It’s a bit noisy unless you ride it on Saturday, then the traffic is all jammed up and the bike is also faster.

Go to the visitors center at the south entrance of Pendleton and sign up for a DBID. Their hours are weekdays only...

Not exactly answering your question, but consider getting to the San Clemente (m-f) or San Clemente Pier (s,s) Metrolink station and jumping on the metrolink to Oceanside. Bypass the base and the freeway. 30 minute train ride and just a few $.

CP is for the birds.

I'm also not much for the onerous CP process. I'd rather ride on the freeway..... but, if you don't, I made a route for you that drops you from anaheim to KV, just north of Mission Valley. It's pretty long and hilly. It goes through Corona, drops by Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, then into Temecula, where I have some riding experience (north of there can be pretty sketchy, but I went through Nuevo, Menifee, and Murieta. then continued on the old 395 to Escondido, through Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch & Mira Mesa. It's longer by about 40 miles, and much hillier.
Check the route I made up... it's public.
