450 lbs with a Giant Sedona DX 2010
 

My bike has been in storage for about 10 years now. I had just bought it then 2 weeks later had cervical surgery and never touched it again. I was about 325 lbs. at the time and was told that it was not an issue with the bike. Since then I have put on about 100 lbs. What if any trouble am I going to have with this bike at my weight? I did ride it up the street yesterday and it seemed fine.

I also need some info for my wife, she is 6'1" 450 lbs and has AVN in her right hip so she has trouble walking. She would like to find a bike or trike that she can ride, it would have to be something easy to get on with her hip preferably a woman's bike. We are limited on money to work with because we are both disabled and only one income.

How wide are you tires on the sedona? It should say on the side (700x__). The wheels and suspension (if it has it) will be the weakest parts.

The market is in short supply right now due to the high demand for bikes. Suggest you look around the used market for a bike for the wife. It may be hard to find a step through frame in a 20-21" size though. You can ask about any bikes you find here.

The tires are 26x1.95

I don't have any personal experience in this department, but I'd cautiously ride the bike to see how it does. Your tires are a good size, just try not to jump curbs or anything as your spokes may break.

It's expensive for my market (doesn't say the year).

Try to find her a bike with no suspension and wider tires, like yours. You mentioned low step so something like the Trek Verve 2 may work if shopping new. You'd have to talk with a shop about weight limit they advertise.

We are looking for used right now. Not sure if she will be able to ride or not, I feel she should get a trike.

These are all look to be in the ballpark of your wife's size and they are mostly vintage mountain bikes that are built strong. Some of them are a drive for you.

I didn't see any used trikes, but that is a good option if you could find one.

I see what you are suggesting as to what kind of bike to look for, the only problem is she has a very bad hip bone and has to have the low step thru. She wanted to try riding my bike but she cannot get her leg that high to mount it. My Giant Sedona DX is the XL.

They made mountain bikes with low step over, but finding one that will fit a 6'1" rider will be difficult. Maybe you should visit a shop and see what they suggest. Perhaps their is a shop near you that sells trikes.

I think you (both) should consider an e-bike with pedal assist. This type of bike would allow you to get as much exercise as you want or can handle in any one ride. If you become too tired to go on you have the motor to bring you home. It helps with challenging hills and makes them doable without excessive demand on your body.
Its a place to start and may open up biking for you and your wife for longer rides in comfort.
If your interested the Electric Bike section on this forum would be a place for you to explore that option.

Even if you lean the bike over, she is unable to get her leg over? I have to lay my bikes over to get my leg over them.

Ebike is a great option, Studies show, you get the same workout as your heart rate stays consistent instead of spiking, you will defiantly go farther when you first start.

The E-bike is not an option after seeing what they cost. At least not right now.
I am looking at a Giant Nutra, it has a 19" frame and 700 x 35c tires with NO suspension to worry about. I think it has 36 spokes, probably 14 gauge.
Would this be a descent choice for her?

I also found a 1980's Schwinn Neu Citi 10 speed. I am waiting to find out the frame size and tire size. It does have a problem where the seat post will not tighten up and just slides. I don't know if that would be an easy fix or not.

Right now it seems almost every bike is over priced because you can't find any at the stores. People are asking for more than they cost new.

I think I may have found a good bike to get her, it needs a little work (replace shift cables). It has a 22" frame and looks nice in the pictures. I am going to try and go see it today after visiting my wife in the hospital. What are your thoughts?

Nishiki backroads $80

Selling my Nishiki Backroads 26” the bike runs smooth and great no shifting but could easily get added at your local bike shop for 30 dollars

Yes I did. Got it for $60. It is missing 1 shift lever and both cables, I just ordered the Sun Tour Alpha 5000 kit for it and should have it Sat. I will post some pictures soon.

I am still not sure if this is going to be the right bike for her. The reach is kind of short, I am thinking about installing Beach Cruiser handlebars because she likes them. It is a threaded stem with a 7/8" quill stem and only pushes forward about 3", trying to decide if I need to make some modifications to get it more forward and higher.

I did order a new seat for it from Worksman Bikes. It is 13" wide and rated for 500lbs. Should have that in about a week. I can use that on any bike I end up with for her if I decide not to finish this one for her needs.
I did take some measurements on the bike.
The frame appears to be a Large with almost a 20 inch seat tube height, wheelbase is 43 inches, top tube at 21 1/2 inches.
If I change the handlebars I will have to replace the brake cables, not a big deal except for the front cable runs thru the stem and I am considering changing out the stem. Have not decided if I will try to find a longer and taller stem (found a 5" on amazon but does not have the hole for the cable) or do one of the adapters to change it to use threadless mount. I guess I would need one of the front brake cable hangers that go on the neck under the threaded nut.
What would be the better option?

I was wondering how wide of a tire I can put on the rims. Right now they are 50-559 26x1.90. there is about 3 inches between the forks. I was thinking a 26x2.25 or can I get any bigger?
