Your example is a beauty.

By all means put a rack on yours. I'd use a Wald basket and a Sugarloaf bag.

Add some decent lights and maybe fenders depending on your location.

Just don't overload the Porteur and you'll be just fine.

Or hang it up, if a very early model. but looks more than 7 cogs.

I'm not well versed in mtbs.

I ended up with a similar bike this week. Its a Hardrock. Its not anyway near as nice as yours and hasn't been rode in years. The shifters are stuck and tires pretty rotten. It and a Bianchi Main Street were a package deal with a Miami Vice Ironman. I don't know what I am going to do with them with 8 grandkids and 8 step grandkids I'll find a use for them.

I like it, if it was in my grasp, I would remove the chainguard, reflectors, and get a lower rise stem.

This example appears to have had little use.

I have one much like the OP’s bike. Big Wald basket on the front, Axiom panniers on the rear, Big Apple tires, 1 x 7 drivetrain. A great town bike; never lets me down.

Your Rockhopper looks to be in amazing condition. What a great find!

A Rockhopper served me very well for several years with rear rack and basket for grocery runs and other carrying duties.

I think mine was a 1990 and I ran some fat street tires on it. It was a nice ride which I no longer have.

These are very versatile bikes that can work well for a variety of purposes.

If of interest these two threads show lots of vintage mt bikes and highlight what the owners have done to make them work for their riding style.

Caution, it can be very time consuming to look through all the cool builds.

Immaculate 1991 Rockhopper Comp! I like the pre-'93s because they have 2 cable stops on the top tube, which makes it easier to run linear pull brakes if you ever decide to go that route. But hey- might as well enjoy this gem in its factory state for a while.
