Why No Kickstands on Road Bikes?

Can someone recommend a reliable kick stand for a CAAD10? Thanks!

pdedes 07-04-14 01:17 PM

try a tree or a post

It'd sure save the finish. Where's CF when it'd really be useful?

Why No Kickstands on Road Bikes?

a) It's not what the pros do.
b) Snobs.
c) It's not what the pros do.

oh look, a wall

Surly for their LHT recommends against using a kick stand for structural reasons, I'm guessing but most road bikes may have the same problem with a kick stand. If you'd like to buy something that serves the same purpose, there is the ( click stand ) or you could make something similar. Or even using a very small bungee cord to hold the front break when you lean your bike up against a fence, post, or wall etc.

Most roadies are more concerned about the bike's weight than its ability to stand

I'm glad I'm not cool.

These people make a CF kickstand.

upstand? Bicycle Stand | Designed by the Upstanding Bicycle Company. Call 919-590-0328 to order.

I'm not sure how reliable it is though.

Most bike manufacturers recommend standing around & lookin' good, riding may lead to structural damage.

Here are a couple of pics of my up stand on my old Escape RX 0. I have since put them on my Escape RX Composite. They are great!

Don't need one.

Because they're designed for moving, not for standing around and admiring.

j-law 07-04-14 03:13 PM

pedal on the curb works for me.

CharlyAlfaRomeo 07-04-14 03:16 PM

The only time I ever stop while road riding is to pee and my bike is fine leaning against a tree or lying in the ease for the 60 seconds or so it takes.

Reliable and kick stand don't go together. A bike as light as a CAAD 10 will blow over in a moderate breeze. I've seen 30 lb. cruisers blown over.

Null66 07-04-14 03:33 PM

My bike, my SO/ riding partners, and my daughter's bike all have kickstands...

chasm54 07-04-14 03:39 PM

The notion is ridiculous. Kickstands are pretty crap even for heavy touring bikes. For a road bike, they add weight and subtract utility. Only a tool would have one.

roccobike 07-04-14 03:51 PM

Interesting, kick stands use to be almost standard equipment on entry level road bikes in the 70's and 80's. They were not uncommon on mid-level road bikes in the same time period. Then Hybrids were invented and the kickstand moved to the hybrid. Personally, I prefer not to have one.

I dont want one. Reminds me of a schwinn varsity.

No. A bike placed on the ground cannot fall on the ground.

A Pletscher is nice for a touring bike because laying down and picking up a 30lb bike with 50lb of gear is a PITA.
