4th of July GMR?
Based on my research - on this forum - it would appear that GMR will be closed to cars and that lots of people will be biking up the hill. Anybody know if this is true and what time do they shut it down to just us bikes and those crazy skateboarders?

I believe they will shut it down Wednesday afternoon so shine your shoes and get pedaling!
You can ride to the base from Fullerton. No pressure. :D |
skateboarders will not be an issue as they will not have sag to take them up the hill

^1 up, 1 across and 1 down. My best time up is 54 mins and my best time across is 56 mins not sure if there is s segment going down. But then you through in stops and you are over on time. I am going to try and start with the Pyschos at the Euro café at 6:30, leave my house at 5:15.

The road should be closed now, as of 10am.
I'll be riding up there tonight after work. Going to do a night ride, GMR to east fork and back. |
^ Is one of us getting confused? I was only there once during '12 Etape, it took me 2:50 from the foot of GMR to the village, 1:05 west on GRR, I did not ride GMR down, but the median time on Strava from East Fork to Sierra Madre is 0:25. That's 4:20 round trip.

Dunno, seems reasonable to me. I do it in under 3 hours:
http://app.strava.com/activities/24331941 You went in 1:32 from gate to village and in 0:47 from village to east fork. Median times are 2:05 gate to village, 0:58 village to east fork, 0:25 east fork to sierra madre. 3:28 total. |

When I trained for Ride the Bear, my best time was 2:06 from the gate to the saddle. An hour and 5 back. Just a little over 3 hours and if one is in form, there is no need to stop at the shack or even hit the village. I'd hit the saddle and still have enough water for the return. Not to mention IndoMikey is about 1/4 of my weight so it seems very possible. :D |
That's not fair for us clydes who have to crawl up that hill, (well, at least me specifically). Guess I'm more into having "fun" than pushing my body to the point where it will break. I'm in awe of those of you who can make that ride in less than three hours, up and back. Mighty impressive!
|
My best time from the stop sign on sierra madre to cow saddle is 2h27m or from the steel gate to the village 2h12m. I am a light Clydesdale. I am ready to challenge that again soon.

Less than three hours to the village and back? That's pretty good!
So we are clipping in at 5, hope to village in 2.5 hours and 30 minute drop down via Mt Baldy Road, so as Lesper put it, up, across then down. Not going back across GRR. For all you hopefuls, GMR/GRR is closed through the 8th it looks like, so you got the whole weekend to ride! |
Here is my early ride, did make the 2.5 hour to village, and did make the 3 hour cutoff, unfortunately clip in ended up being 5:30, the drive from Mills to Sierra Madre proved longer than expected.

Here is my ride. One guy crashed up there today and it looked bad. My prayers are with him. http://app.strava.com/activities/64721199

hundreds and hundreds of riders out on gmr/grr and plenty of them attempted the ride from the village to the lifts. of course, many opted
for the "shack only" ride so as not to waste premium posing time. very few riders left on gmr/grr after noon tho which made for great descending. saw the aftermath of the accident mentioned above and a handful of cyclists really suffering the effects of the heat but otherwise, everyone seemed to be having a blast. |

I missed all of that, when I dropped my brother back up on dirt parking lot before gate, there definitely was a gaggle of cyclists and hikers there. When we went up, there was no one, only 2 people passed us on GRR, and at the very end of GRR (the top from the other way) were 2 hikers and a cyclist together taking in the view. |

Lots of riders, probably hundreds, and I didn't see anyone else go down. I had a great time but didn't go to the ski lifts. We started at Encanto to 39 to East fork. Some of my friends went to the lifts but I waited at the village and had fries and part of a sandwich. |
It looks like there were two seperate incidents today. Both required emergency responce. When we finished at the lower gate there were two Glendora police cars. They were stopping riders from going up. I have a bad feeling they might close the road to everyone in the future on the 4th Of July.
