Forgive me, I am in Oregon and we do not have grizzlies here. Would you mind sharing the argument in favor of reintroduction? We have reintroduced wolves here and it has not exactly gone smoothly.

We're talking about a million and a quarter acres of wilderness. I don't mean land with trees, I mean bona fide wilderness with no roads, homes, farms, etc. There are few trails, many of them are rarely traveled. Currently about 6 grizzlies live in this area, the plan is to introduce 25 more over 10 years. The last confirmed evidence of their existence was in 2010, the last actual sighting was years earlier. The potential for conflict with humans is almost non existent.

Grizzles are native to the area. They play an ecological role, and they're part of a healthy, intact, wild ecosystem. Nature is why people visit the North Cascades, I hike and backpack there every chance I get and welcome their return.

This is one of only five grizzly recovery areas. They're a threatened species. In the long term, this is about their continued presence on Earth. Humans have dominion over most of the PNW, wilderness is for nature.

Thanks so much for explaining. It will be interesting to see how all the various 'stakeholders' interact as this gets sorted. If WA is anything like OR on these kinds of issues, there will be screaming and fighting and kicking and clawing 'til the very end. Plenty of litigation, too, I imagine. In any event, I hope you personally get what you are aiming for out of this. The only grizzlies I have ever seen were in Alaska. They wanted the fish I was catching. I did not give the fish to the bears. I ate them.

I have backpacked and cycled in grizzly country. I wasn't scared.

FYI hunting is prohibited in national parks.

Wasn't advocating hunting in National Parks, just thought it would be a good way to get hunters & pack hound guys to support your re-introduction.

I support bringing them back. Wolves too. Bring back the balance. Nature knows the way.

A few people, cows, sheep, whatever, are all a tiny, tiny price in the big scheme of things, and I'd say that even if I, or one of my relatives, was one of the "people" I refer to. You really want "the wild" to be wild like it was and is supposed to be. Think long term.

Better to leave them up the tree with newly learned fear of man & dog.

Hunting what? I run into deer hunters in the Stanislaus when fishing. Pretty sure Grizzly would be off limits unless they became a nuisance. Our main predator here in the bay area are cougers. Anytime there is an interaction between them and residents, it doesn't end well.

When I was younger, the Dog, and cats were all kicked out at night.

Now, lots of people are saying that everything must be kept in at night.

I've been pet free for many years, but a kitten adopted me last fall. Now I think something is hunting her. She certainly isn't the apex predator on the block.

So, now it is a strict morning/night curfew.

I don't think it is a Grizzlys here. There is supposed to be a Cougar in the neighborhood, but I don't think it is the problem.

I got a glimpse of the culprit, and I think it may be a Fisher. I'll have to try to set up a camera to monitor. But, as far as I can tell, Fishers are plentiful in Canada, but were eradicated from the lower 48 about a century ago. And, slowly reintroduced to the area. Not a lot here, but it is possible one has made its way into the neighborhood.

I see major conflicts as the city folks have grand ideas to reintroduce species into the "country". Then the the city folks want to take away the traps, bait, gunz, and eventually the dogs. And, that'll be fine until the country starts invading the city.

All the city folk are fine to have cougars in my back yard, but once one ventures into their back yard... it is quickly removed.

The Fisher is back... the critter that I think may be hunting my cat. I still need to get a game camera setup to verify.

Of course, Washington is still missing the Saber Toothed Tiger. Perhaps the next critter to release on the streets of Seattle.
