What do you eat before you ride?

Just getting some ideas, what do you eat/recomend to eat before you ride?

gkelley 10-23-09 04:40 PM

if it is just base miles
small portions of any of these
-yogurt
-oatmeal
-lots a fruit
-egg or two
If i'm looking for a lot of energy pretty much what is above except a lot more of it. some rice or pasta too

Food.

Something with a fair amount of low-glycemic carbs, some protein, not much fat. You don't want to load up with sugar since you'll get an insulin reaction. You don't want food that is hard to digest- climbing a steep hill or sprinting to get on the back of a fast group with a stomach full of eggs or sausage is a good way to puke.

I like grape nuts and home made low sugar granola with low fat yogurt, protein powder, and fruit. Or whole wheat pancakes with home made low sugar jam, no butter. Oatmeal is always good. And a big cup of espresso.

Some people eat power bars or some other sports food before a ride. I get sick of bars as it is. I won't eat them when I could be eating real food.

i had a sausage bagette once. it wasn't a good idea.

stick with porridge and banana

ghsmith54 10-23-09 05:04 PM

I usually have the following:

  • 1/2 orange
  • 1 cup decaffeinated tea
  • Small bowl of cereal (usually Life, I'm hooked on the stuff)

Then I get dressed and head out the door so there's probably about 30 minutes between finishing eating and turning the cranks.

I do eat a few hours before when i ride in the afternoon, but on saturday the ride i go on starts at 7am, I have to leave by 6:30 to get there (at college and have no car ATM). needless to say I dont get up, at 3am.

Most of my enemies have moved away though, so I eat porridge instead.

MajorMantra 10-23-09 05:27 PM

Before morning rides, fruit and fibre type cereal with fresh banana or apple and a cup of tea.

Before afternoon rides, whatever I'm having for lunch - usually a sandwich of some sort.

Depends, Having worked nights for years, I get up in the morning and do 30-40 local hilly ride with nothing. Maybe a bottle of G-Dade on the ride. I eat after the ride.

If it's a century with 10,000 ft, a big spaghetti dinner the night before, and pancakes in the morning!:D

GirlAnachronism 10-23-09 05:55 PM

Oatmeal made with soy milk, raw almonds, and fresh blueberries or dried cranberries before a long ride.

Lately I've been having a piece of whole grain spelt bread toasted with peanut butter and honey before my early morning rides and it's awesome.

Yes, and again about 30 minutes before you ride.

What you eat before you ride doesn't really matter. If you're doing a long ride you might want to avoid foods that are extra spicy or have known "bad reactions" (I avoid dairy products before a long ride). If you're doing a hard ride you might want to avoid fatty foods.

What you eat during the ride is what matters ... especially on rides over 2 hours.

ImaPoser 10-23-09 06:50 PM

Whatever I want. That's why I ride. I like to eat crap. I need to burn a large amount of calories a day or I'd be huge. Since it was my son's birthday this week, my pre-ride snacks have been cake and mountain dew.

I have found that grinding their bones to make my bread is also satisfying and nutritious

I like a peanut butter and banana sandwich on whole grain toast before my weekend morning rides. Plenty of carbs, some protien, and tasty!

I would have thought you would eat toll house cookies before your rides.
