I remember those bikes from magazines and ad's but I never saw one on the road or in a bike shop. Strange looking as it was, it was kind of cool. Thanks for posting the article.

Here's my 1996 Softride Powercurve Solo that I sold last year.
It had an aluminum frame and fork, but still weighed approx. 23 lbs without pedals.
It was a blast to ride on mostly flat and rough northern Midwest US roads.
But here in Henderson I would have bought a new drivetrain and wheels to make it a better climber.
Also, the beam just doesn't provide a benefit while riding on the smooth roads we have here.

Interesting side route in bike design. Claim was that lacking a seat tube gave an unfair aero advantage in road racing and were banned along with Y frames.
Stayed legal in Iron Man competition though, and I read that ~'97 one out of seven Iron Man bikes were Soft Ride.

I'm certainly no expert on these but I picked up a rough one locally out of curiosity. Fixed 'er up a bit and then just realized how fast it was. It's also very comfortable on the rough chip seal I have to ride on. Finally on the plus side, much like riding rollers it really makes you concentrate of spinning smoothly or you will find yourself bouncing on it.

They definitely take a little bit of technique to get the most out of, but when you get it, boy, are they a rewarding ride.
