After I replaced the rear spokes, it's a really nice ride. I've changed the handlebars and brake levers (now QR) since these pictures were taken but it's essentially the same bike.

The second century I did on it went much better.

- Just 4 Maruishi bikes in the whole world?

No wonder they went out of biz!

I thought Maruishi was doing well in Japan until just a couple years ago. Didn't they go down in some Enron-esque blaze of shame?

Yes, they zonked out on some Enron type debacle. This webpage on Maruishi touring bikes touches on that.

Too bad because these were very nice bikes - (At least as good as any of the better known and respected 80's Japanese makes).

Thanks 3alarmer, but I'm afraid their obscurity doesn't quite work to our advantage!

I wish I had pictures of mine (I sold it in 1984 to buy my Pinarello.). It was a one of a kind prototype that I bought as a bare frame and was about 2cm too big for me, but was so beautiful I bought it anyway. I got it at the old (original, not current) Bicycle Renaissance on Columbus Ave in NYC. Criterium geometry, vertical dropouts, with an indent in the seat tube (really short seat stays), thinned lugs with perfect brazing. Red, of course. I built it up with Campy NR drivetrain and Suntour Superbe brakes that I moved over to the Pinarello. I hope someone in Seattle still has it.

Without pictures (and current ownership) I'm not sure if it counts towards your 5....

Unless it was something like the Professional in the first catalog link above, I really can't visualize it from your description, dmp. - But I'll take your word for it: Make it #5.

I got this lovely Maruishi about a year ago at a arae sale. It was too big for me so I sold it. he gentleman that bought it had a vintage Bianchi. He said that the Maruishi rode better in his opinion. He had been riding this Bianchi for years, and the Maru for a few days after I sold it to him! This baby was in immaculate condition and it cost me the sum of $40.00.

Mine was found in a shed at the city park while I was working there, lots of weeds growing up thru the wheels. A Maruishi Emperor.
Its a cheaper frame, I guess, the lugs are rough and no derailer hanger. But it is one of those rigs that just ride really nice. Its been lots of things, fixed gear/single speed, rando, three speed and right now a north road bar city bike with stem shifters(I wanted to try it, not a huge fan, going back to the bar ends).
Here it is in touring mode. It had Shimano 600 on it when I found it, and thats pretty much what it gets in gearing mode. Love my Maruishi.

And to prove that I ride it(at least to train stations). I am seriously considering taking on my Mississippi River Trail ride this summer instead of my Univega GT. No brazons, but I love the ride.

No picture but I gave my daughter a Maruishi fixti that I turned into a 5 speed grocery getter. Very nice bike I found at the Yellow Bike I volunteer at.

Just checked a fixed gear site, they had 15 Maruishi's pictured.

Thanks for those links, Auch! It's the first catalog scan I have seen. And it appears my bike's color is "Claret Wine." I have most definitely never seen wine that color, and I might avoid it if I did! (That's saying something, believe me.)
Now I want to take a photo of my golden kangaroo, too...

Ha! You can probably tell by my set up that mine is technically a little too big, too. I am just so taken with it I don't care. :love:

That's about the same amount of seat post I have showing
on some of the bikes I enjoy riding the most, right now.

Not sure what that means, other than it follows an older school
philosophy of frame fit/rider.

That's it ??? There are maybe five or six of these remaining as road bikes
and the remaining ones have been fixified ??
