Drop Out Suggestions
 

Hello all, I'm new to the forum and looking for advice. I'll be starting my 3rd fillet brazed frame in the next couple of weeks and am looking for advice for a 12 mm thru-axle dropout with eyelets. I was intrigued by the option from Framebuilder supply, but got turned off by the fact that the derailleur hanger is not replaceable. I'm a huge fan of the Paragon Machine Works dropouts and have used them in the past, but am looking to see if anyone has any other dropouts that they love.

Why not use their modular droputs? You could just replace the whole dropout. A pair is not that expensive.

I have used these on a couple bikes and they were easy to work with and there are many configurations so if at some point you wanted to switch to non-TA or single speed or whatever it's pretty easy. I prefer small dropouts and I don't really like that a highly stressed frame member is bolted on but, they seem to be holding up to daily commuting for a couple years without loosening. You'll want to get a sacrificial set of the inserts as heat will discolor them when tacking them with brass. If you're using Tig you might be quick enough to not transfer much heat and avoid the discoloration.

I used a pair of those modular dropouts on my MTB and the bolt on dropouts have not been a problem, except for some rusting of the bolts. The main downside of using those dropouts is disc brake mounting. Using an IS tab is very difficult, because the tab hangs off the back of the frame component in the seatstay orientation. It can be mounted on the chainstay, but the seatstay must be bent to allow clearance for the brake caliper. They may work OK with Post Mount or Flat Mount, but I haven't tried either of those with the modular dropouts. I have pics of two frames that I used them on with chainstay IS tabs, if anyone needs to see what I'm talking about.

I don't like the idea of just bolts holding on the insert so I make the receiver encircle almost the whole protrusion for the thru-axle.

I wish paragon had TA options without integraded brake mounts.

Paragon has round thru axle dropouts.

I don't see any of the round ones that appeal to me and I would have to bend my seat stays.

I thought about the hacksaw approach, but the weight saving webs are in the wrong place.

Have you thought of the DR2056 series. The cutout would get filled in when attaching the stay.

One nice thing about Paragon dropouts is that the paragon dummy axle would fit. Guess I'm going to have to open up the dropout a little. I remember Don being unapologetic about this issue.
