What C&V small parts would you like to see repopped?
The intrepid efforts of @zammykoo to reproduce usable pedal dust caps got me thinking: If I had the resources, what small parts would I like to see reproduced for some of my C&V projects? Three that I can think of immediately are the aforementioned Campy dust caps, the plastic Simplex FD clamp assembly, and the main pivot spring for first-Gen Cyclone RDs. Turns out that @gearheadgeek is actually working on prototypes for the Simplex clamp. What would be on your wish list?
|
1-Campy DT shifter backing plates, so people can easily run Campy's 10-sp bar ends as DT shifters and really take advantage of all the 10-sp Campy FD/RD/wheelsets out there to "upfit" classic frames.
2-Dust caps for Tricolor cranksets followed closely by dust caps for Suntour GPX cranksets. 3-Cable pinch bolt assemblies for numerous Shimano and Campy FD's and RD's. 4-Barrel ends for numerous brake calipers. 5-Replacement QR assemblies for numerous brake calipers. They deteriorate so fast. 6-Dust caps for numerous classic pedals, especially Suntour GPX. 7-Lower-profile cradle top pieces for about 6-7 types of older seat posts in order to make use of modern saddles. 8-A way to replace the bottle cage bosses on Cannondale and Klein frames. Once they start spinning in place, they're almost toast. Once they've spun a few times, they are toast. |
The only thing that comes to mind are the great water bottle cages from T.A., especially the ref 213 handlebar cage:
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4184/3...d53cae_z_d.jpg Clearly, this isn't something that you'd make with molds or 3D printing. .... except you might 3D print or mold the plastic piece at the top of the downtube cages (sorry, don't have a photo handy). It seems like Nitto could easily reproduce the T.A. cages. Perhaps I need to pester V.O. or Compass to run the idea past Nitto?? edit: I'd also nominate the nifty Milremo plastic handlebar plugs. Lightweight, colorful, and kept the cloth bar tape tucked into the ends of the bars. The Speedplay Museum on flickr has a nice shot of them: https://www.flickr.com/photos/speedp...als/6967993292 Steve in Peoria (with 3 of the T.A. handlebar cages on bikes, as well as a few sets of the Milremo plugs) |
1. Hoods for certain levers, 80's Shimano in particular.
2. Clamp bolts for Cylone Mk 1 and 2. 3. Reasonably priced smallest chain rings that will fit: 41t/144, 37t/122, 38t/128, 35t/116. |
Not sure if it is "small" part, but cogs for Suntour Alpha freewheel.
|
|
1) nutted brake bolts to convert Shimano recess nut calipers for the older frames.
2) replacement cleats for older, obsolete clipless pedals (specifically for me, MKS Mapstage) 3) premium brake hanger hardware for setting up cantilever brakes. 4) Suntour Superbe Pro 8 speed Accushift replacement cassettes. These are ones that would have the different size spacers for the lower 3 cogs and the the (slightly thicker?) spacer for the larger 5 cogs. Ideally the person who would tackle this task could improve upon the original by making the new one lighter & maybe even quicker shifting. It would also have only a single threaded locking outer cog, not the doubled-up threaded outer cog as seen in the Microdrive series. 5) Uniglide small parts for updating/maintaining older Shimano Uniglide cassettes & freewheels. A batch run of 7403 Dura Ace freehub bodies - the ones that take the proprietary coarse threaded mounting bolt but that are also combo UG/HG compatible would be most welcome 6) classic road triple cranks, modular in style. These could include a quality forged or CNC 5 arm spider to accept modern 130mm Shimano spec chainrings & the normal spec “granny” ring but in a full range of sizes. 7) more reinterpretations on quill or 1” ahead stems that accept 31.8 handlebars. 8) extra pretty brackets for mounting water bottle cages on frames without braze-on bottle bosses. 9) aftermarket Octalink one key release crank bolts. 10) reissues of rare, 1” threaded, sealed cartridge or needle bearing headsets. American Classic, Specialized, come to mind. 11) a new production run of Salsa “Shaft” seatposts in a variety of lengths & diameters. 12) a fresh production run of Mavic Retrofriction shift levers, preferably in anodized colors that mount the Allen head or Torx bolts as opposed to a flat blade screwdriver. 13) bring back the Rhode Gear Flickstand! This is all I can think of right now. |

YES!! I just replaced the cantis on my Cannondale because the broken dust covers were making the brake feel hitched. Also the plastic top tube brake cable routing... things. AND the plastic chain hanger. All those bits from late 80s to early 90s Cannondales. If they could be made in a high strength resin that would be great. Three hole aero cages for Shimano 105/600 pedals. |
It's not exactly "small parts," but as far as components- I'd love to see a modern version of Command Shifters.

I for one would love a set of Moots Mounts for 650b conversions.
http://forums.mtbr.com/attachments/v...s-img_2586.jpg I actually emailed Moots a few weeks ago and there are unfortunately no plans to manufacture them again. :( |
What I have done:
the hard to find Terry pump clip for a Pennine CO2 pump (or similar) to a specific brazeon https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4548/3...ce3da046_b.jpg reproduction Shockstop 'honking' rubbers https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4432/3...505a9c0b_b.jpg reproduction cable bands https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4543/3...da3b8f13_b.jpg soon to try the Shockstop and Dunlop (not the Milremo) bar end plugs and then progress to GB Superhood full and half hoods, because I have projects that require them. |

I could probably use something like that for converting my narrow canti studs to something more along the lines of modern canti studs. For you, wouldn't something like this work though? Offtopic: Anyone know what kind of brakes those are in bear_a_bug's photo? |

Huret derailleur mounting washers for Campagnolo style dropouts.

+1 for Shimano brake lever hoods. Finally found a decent pair recently and was actually happy to pay €25 for it.
|
Lots of good suggestions here. Many of them will require some level of metal machining and welding/brazing. The plastic and rubber pieces would be more manageable.

Some others I thought of after posting: -The DT attachment bolt for Suntour Symmetric aero shifters -Transfer spring for a Bendix 2-speed kickback hub -Crown race for prewar HP Snyder-built bikes (think Rollfast, Crown, Overland) -#12-24 x 3" square-head axle adjuster/track screws for the same. Everyone else used 1/4-24. |
The metal plate with holes that kept a Pletscher rack from sliding down the seat stays. Two holes near the top were the right size and width for the Pletscher's mounting bolts and nuts. One of several other holes running down along its midline lined up with the rear brake bridge, and provided level and secure mounting of the rack.

I'd love to see replacement dust cap things for Shimano low profile canti brakes, LX and XT specifically. They don't do anything, but are always cracked or missing. I suspect they would have to be made of something slightly rubbery to pop them into place though.
|
All I want is the Simplex Prestige front derailleur piece. :D If I had one a Simplex FD would go back onto my PX10.
An old style small mouth water bottle with a FLIP top would be nice, but I've given up on that. Not really a bike part anyway. |
