Wheel upgrade: Mavic Ksyrium Elite Wheelset

I am upgrading the wheels on my Cannondale Synapse Carbon 5 - looking at the Mavic Ksyrium Elite.

I am 6-1, 185 and ride more centuries than races. Any feedback?

Forgot to add - currently have Shimano RS10.

Decent wheelset, pretty non-killable. I'm only 11 lbs lighter than you (was your weight when I got the set) and they're still round and true after about 3500 miles. I just upgraded to HEDs, so mine may be up for sale soon, but I have no bad experiences.

FYI, however, if you plan on buying new and/or paying retail for them, give a shout over to psimet2001 (member here) for a custom set of wheels. They'll be cheaper, lighter and more durable. If you want a box-set (i.e. mavic), look over to HED. They have stallion builds if you're worried about durability. The Kermesse runs about $750, slightly lighter than the Elites and I'm in love with them.

If you aren't having problems with the RS10, I don't consider that a huge upgrade, especially if you are going to be paying MSRP for the Ksyriums.

Otherwise, the Mavic's are pretty solid. I don't really like their freehub design but it is simple and easy to do maintenance on.

You can build a custom wheel for that price and get a superior wheel.

Here's the deal as I see it w/ the ksyrium elites. They look badass, no doubt about it. They are stiff (for me, although I am very light) and durable. They seem to roll well (I have no experience w/ better wheelsets though), and as a whole I really enjoy my set. However, in hindsight, I'm not sure if I would repeat the purchase. If I had $650 to spend on wheels (retail for ksyrium elites), I would scour ebay, the bf road bike marketplace, for sale section on weightweenies.starbike and slowtwitch.com for a good used set of Ksyrium Sl wheels. They will be lighter, more durable and higher quality. Alternatively, I would get a custom set from psimet or someone similar.

That being said, you won't be disappointed w/ the elites. Mine have been great so far. But, there is nothing glaringly awesome about them.

Also, check out the new dura ace clincher wheels, they are pretty bad asss

Don't pay MSRP. If you can get a pair for about 400 bucks, go for it.

If you are paying 500+ bucks, consider williams system 30 (or maybe even 30X at your weight).

Or if you want to save money and get reasonable wheels in the 300 range look at neuvations.

And of course the "CAAD9" of wheels, open pro's/ultegra hubs.

Did you ask psimet?

Thanks for the quick feedback. I just submitted a request to psimet.
