Gipiemme Special Triple Crankset.. any ideas?

I found an interesting crankset made by Gipiemme, they are a triple with a wide range of 51-42-28. They are used but look to be in good shape still. I'm considering them for a touring build with a 13-32 Freewheel.... but I can't seem to find much of any information on them. Does anyone have any background on the quality of these or if they are forged or cast? Also, shot in the dark, the Q Factor? Much Appreciated!

It's a Gipiemme triple. VeloBase.com - Component: Gipiemme Special Triplo (Strada Triple)

It's forged AFAIK, Gipiemme was kind of like Ofmega or for that matter Dura Ace of the period. More or less campy quality, but finish not as nice and significantly cheaper.

It's of the highest quality. it's cold forged. the story BITD was that
GPM did contract work for Campy and that that crank and a
Super Record crank are the same.

Thank you Salamandrine & Steve Sumner! I really appreciate that information, very helpful :thumb: They look really nice and the wide spread 51-42-28 chainrings seem like they would be a great fit for a 13-32 freewheel.

Guess I'll put in a best offer for them and see what happens....

This is a cool crank. The velobase entry says nothing about the BCD for the inner ring. Hopefully it is something useful like an 86 bcd. I have a stronglight triple which is 144/86 bcd. The velobase entry is also just a little off. It says that the rarity is "average" and the quality is just a little above average. Granted that is based on one user but this crank is rare and looks to be very good quality.

Which means its susceptible to the same cracking issues the Record arms (no difference between the SR and NR arms of the period) are known for.

What do you think the value of this crankset is? $120 too much or about right?

Nesteel, if your Campy crank gets hairline cracks at the spider/arm
interface all you do is file them away adding a radius to the area and
the cracks won't return.

When I think about prices, I think of alternatives:

If you have a campagnolo double, you can triplize it for less,

144 BCD Triplizer, 42 Teeth

I have a similar Gipiemme triple, and the inner ring is something unique like 83 BCD. Boulder Bike had a few NOS rings, but otherwise your low gear choice of rings will be quite limited.
Gipiemme Special 170mm right hand NOS crankarm with 30 tooth inner chainring and hardware - NOS - no left arm spare 34 also!

I'm aware of how to deal with the cracks. You need to file the entire crack out, or they'll come back. However, there is a limit to how much you can file before the crank arm is junk. If a previous owner let the crack get out of hand, they will in fact be wall art.

Honestly- If you're planning on using it for touring with any sort of load- I would get something a little more "common" but much more functional than a 144 BCD crankset. 110/74- and not 51 and 42 chainrings.

I have an Avocet crankset with 50/42/28-
