BDop DIY Kinlin wheelset or Shimano 6800 wheelset?
 

Both are about the same price, and close in weight, but which would you prefer?

The BDop wheels are slightly wider(1mm inner width), but the Shimano wheels are tubeless.

What kind of hubs on the BDop wheels?

I really like Shimano hubs, so I would be leaning that direction.

Get those Bdop they are great 2500 miles on mine roll well. I built them
and can so that makes it easy. Not even touched them up still true. Weight is good I think 1660 24/28.

As do I for the ability to overhaul the cup & ball systems and set bearing loads precisely myself as well as the quiet sturdy freehubs design.
Not RS6800 but I've been riding the heavier RS30 set for two seasons now and find them reliable and don't doubt the aero efficiency of 16/20 bladed spoke config with a moderately deep rim that doesn't feel affected by crosswinds.

For a lighter climbing set I've been eyeing the RS81-C35 set myself.

Those are nice wheels, but I'm trying to keep this wheelset around $300.

Vote for BDop for the following reasons:
1. He maintains all the hub component parts on his website, so you have access to anything if ever needed.
2. You already build your own wheels, so you will know the quality of the build.
3. BDop is active on the board, responsive to e-mails and issues, and a general good egg. Eggs are good.

Would you build the Bdop set yourself? If I had the skills, I'd go that route. Otherwise 6800 or Fulcrum Racing 5.

Building wheels is no problem for me, I've built hundreds over the years.

This is probably the route I'll choose. $299 with CX-Ray spokes is a good deal, but those 6800 wheelsets look pretty sweet.

I essentially built BDop's 32/28 kit, before he offered it. Got the hubs from him and the rest from other vendors. I have about 2,000 miles on them and like them.

I have no doubt that they are fine wheels, but there's something cool about those 6800 wheels. The only thing that bothers me are the spokes. I wonder if the are proprietary straight pull Shimano spokes, or would Sapim/DT spokes work fine in a pinch.

That's a deal breaker.

Fulcrum made the Racing 5 'LG' slightly wider compared to last year (16c internal). You might at least check that price at Ribble before grabbing the bdop kit. I'd bet the spokes are proprietary as well though.

Wow - hadn't seen that he'd throw together this deal with the CX-Rays. Hell, the 60 spokes (in the 28/32 set) by themselves will run you close to $200 from most places. Awesome deal.

I was hoping to get a little feedback on 6800 wheelsets. A friend in SLC has a set, but his technical feedback is a little less than I'd like before making a purchase. The spoke details are my biggest concern.

Nobody puts Bdop in a corner.

Yes it's a great deal, but my concern is the seam on the hoop. Is there any problem with brake pulsing?

I hope he chimes in with wheel weights.

I haven't felt any pulsing on my XC-279 hoops.

Same price and similar weight I would get the Ultegra's. Already built and tubeless ready if one wants to try that in the future would be the best deal.

I had great luck with my XR-270 hoops, but read something on the Fairwheel bike blog about pulse issues.

That's a little why the decision is tough. Building the wheels is no big deal(It's my side job), but if the 6800 wheels use strictly proprietary spokes its a deal breaker.

I have some Stan's hoops that are tubeless, but I use tubes and Michelin Pro4 tires because I get them cheap(and the ride is phenomenal). Tubeless tires are expensive.
