Fitting IGH three speeds?
Hello! Can anyone tell me if there are any guidelines for fitting bikes like the Raleigh three speeds of the 50's? The Sports, or those Hercules and Robinhood type bikes? I've been over in the C&V forum for a while, and FINALLY got serious enough about bike fit to take measurements and do some fine tuning on my fit. I discovered I'm a "shortback" and on road bikes I fit a frame size larger than my 5'10" hight would suggest. 60ish cm seat tube and 56ish cm top tube are where I've landed. So I tend to go for larger bikes and fit a shorter reach stem. Should a British 3sp size out the same way? Cheers |
Frame sizing back then was much more variable, IMO. However the main aspect which still hold true today is that if you can straddle the bike flat footed and be happy with whats going on between your legs, then you are most of the way there.
The more variable part comes in whether they changed the top tube lengths or angles of seat tube and head tubes to adjust the bb position and reach to the handlebars. If the straddle test passes, then you can usually make the other stuff work for you. You might have to compromise more on having that bb in the ideal position for your type riding and whether you want a power fit or comfort fit. Otherwise stem lengths and other things might need to be changed out just like they are today. |
Thank you, that's about what I thought. I'm searching for a nice British roadster type bicycle, but with my stable I've also been pondering the idea of building one up. I have a few 80's tourers and I was thinking of tearing down something mid/high level, like a Miyata 610 or Trek 520, and rebuilding it as an upright winter bike with an IGH and chain guard. |

Self analysis .... If it's comfortable , then it is.. standover the frame , to judge the clearance
bigger size is also longer reach.. sitting bolt upright, most saddle manufacturers suggest wider saddles Such as Brooks , for their C series 19 is the one for that posture , 17 & 15 if leaning over more 30 or less than 45, .. .... |

My build idea is roughly; One Trek 520 or Miyata 610 frame, 24” or 23” respectively 700 wheels with fat tires and fenders (If Canti’s reach...) short stem, and swept back bars for “tea sipping posture” used sprung Brooks from the Bay of E IGH in eather 3 or 5 speed flavor portour front basket for 12 packs/groceries some kind of lovely vintage chain guard THEN I’ll ride around in a derby hat and with a cigar disregarding the constabulary and frightening flocks of geese on the Lakeshore MUP. |

A 23" ought to do the job. I'm 5'8" and ride a 21", although I needed to get a longer-than-stock seatpost to get adequate leg extension. I have a spare 23" 3-speed frame that I think would work well for an old-school big-frame fit, but haven't gotten around to transferring parts or building it up from scratch. There I was, innocently poking around eBay, like you do, when I came across a gen-u-ine Raleigh three speed! It was local pick up only, but local-ish enough to me, so I put in a low bid on a lark. Well, they accepted it! I JUST bought a bike for my wife and I wasn’t expecting my bid to be taken, but man, I’m psyched! I’ve been wanting to try out a Raleigh Sports or similar for about a year now, and I hear this has a very similar ride to the sports. But in a tidier package! |
I do still plan on an upright conversion for one of those tourers, but now I’m thinking I’ll keep the drive train. So it’ll be a city bike, if not an IGH. |
