Help with SS to 1x10 setup

Hello all, I'm working on converting my Raleigh tripper to a 1x10 setup. I've done my homework as best I could and came up with a list of parts that I think will work. I'm hoping some more knowledgeable members could let me know if I have everything I would need and also if what I listed will fit before I hit the buy button. I chose Tiagra for the price and that I can get an 11-34 cassette.

These are the parts I want to buy:

Some questions:
I think if I pull the rear gear and slide that spacer off a cassette will fit on it, is there anything else I need for that?
Will I have any problem with the 46t chainring (not to thick for that chain)?
Will the levers work ok with my mechanical discs?
That bar should work with my current stem (I think they're all standard now)?

Thanks in advance for any help, I just don't want to buy anything unnecessary.

Here's the bike:

If you're asking whether you'll be able to clamp the bar in the stem, yes. They're both 31.8mm.

People usually need to shorten their stems when converting to drop bars, though. Most hand positions on a drop handlebar have you reaching farther than on flat bars.

It looks like OP is buying from CRC, so he/she could look for the short Brand-X stem, it's 40mm or so, perfect for drop bars as well as cheap.

I guess I'll try it and see, if I need it shorter I'll check on that one. I'm almost 6'6" so it might work out, good to know the bar will fit though.

sooner or later, IME, anyone that starts mixing and matching parts to customize their bikes, like me, will end up with more than a few ...er 'oversights'.

BTW, nice thing is that after a while you can end up with enough to almost, i say almost, build an entire bike. :thumb:

looks like you know what you're doing, but as far as the componentry (spell checker says this is not a word  ) goes, i might double check that that medium cage dérailleur is capable of handling the spread of cogs in that cassette. i think it's more than likely that it can.

Your Disk Brakes *may* be a problem

Depends if those Aries brakes are designed to use V-brake cable pull or canti/caliper style cable pull.
google didn't return any obvious info

but I suspect they are V-brake style longer cable pull...
in which case, the road levers won't work right with them....

do your existing flatbar levers have any markings that might give a hint? do they say V-brake on them anyplace?
taking a photo of them with the lever squeezed so we can see the cable attachment point might also help determine

CONFRIMED

https://www.tektro.com/products.php?p=23

your Tektro Aries brakes use Linear Pull
which is Not Compatible with the New road levers.

using them with road levers, will result in inadequate cable pull -the pads won't move/retract far enough, meaning potential pad clearance/draggin issues, brakes that lockup too easily

so you'll need to swap the brake calipers out. For a Road Disk Brake caliper
the TRP Spyre comes to mind as the quintessential road disk caliper
I dunno if there are more Budget options for road though....

Yea they're linear pull, well i guess I'll check out the Spyres.

Avid BB7 road is another short pull.. / more bux the Hy Rd TRP cable pulled hydraulic caliper.

For a 1 x 10 setup I would go with these, they can be obtained in a long pull version that is compatible with your current brake callipers. You only have to buy one shifter and you don't have to change the callipers

This shifters look pretty cool, I wonder how they feel compared to shimano

Shimano what? This is a totally different setup than a Shimano brifter. As long as your goal is to have a 1 x 10 setup without spending too much, this fills the bill. Just make sure that the shifter matches the rear derailleur. "Feel" is subjective. What some people like may not be what you like. You are proposing an expensive solution that involves changing more parts and you still don't know if your solution "feels" better than mine

I was referencing the feel of the Tiagra shifters I had in the OP (they are cheaper than the Gevenalle). I watched a few videos on them and I believe I'd prefer that shifting style over the current Shimano setup. I've never heard of these before. It's too bad I bought the Tiagras already, guess I'll just pay the 1.99 to send them back to CRC.

Anyone know of any good discount codes to use at Gevenalle? It seems best to just buy from them directly from the prices I gathered.

Thanks for showing these to me.

So far I'm not having a good experience with Chainreactioncycles. For one I didn't know this was a UK based company with no US support. This may be obvious to some but since they had US flags posted all over for their "memorial day" sale as well as everything in $USD I feel a bit mislead. Secondly I wanted to cancel part of my order the same day I paid, nothing was shipped yet they couldn't cancel and said I had to return the item when I received it. Third and worst, part of my order is missing and now unless I want to pay for an international call I have to communicate via email.

Doubtful that I'll ever buy from them again.

embrace the 'oneness' of the internet. i think the only foreign land i haven't bought a bike part from is Delaware. :)

I do most shopping online, however i've had an easier and faster time of products coming from dingdong, china. Returning the shifters was a pita; $2 fee fine, but having to pay that $2 through a third party affiliate that uses paypal is BS. That's just a way to pimp out your credit/info for another company to use for solicitation. Which they did right quick since I'm already receiving spam from new companies such as Purecycles, some kit company, and a plethora of other garbage.

Will also add that they run their business of GMT and are closed Sat-Mon. For a company that declares itself as the "largest online bike parts distributor" that's horrible customer service. If you don't want to pay Euro wages for someone to answer phone calls fine, but at least hire a call service from India!

Well after ChainReactionCycles took a month and a half to refund my money I bought the genevalle shifters alcjphil recommended. They shipped quick with good packaging. I ordered the 10sp long pull levers. From the description they stated compatible with Shimano 10sp setups; after trying for hours to get it to index properly I contacted Gevenalle only to find out they're compatible with 105, Ultegra, and Duraace. It would be nice if they put that in the description better because it's cryptically placed on some random page in their website. So no luck indexing with Tiagra; for now I'm stuck with friction shifting a 10sp cassette. They are also impossible to shift from the drops, not ideal. So in the end this was an incredibly annoying project and I'll know in the future to be very wary of parts advice and distribution websites.
