Truck mount help?
 

So I have a couple of these mounted in my truck to haul bikes to riding locations.

they work awesome just drop out the front wheel and lock down the bike and ready to roll. Works for road and mountain bikes and my wifes hybrid too.

When my son had his first bike it was smaller and I would put it in the back seat of the truck no issues. Now he got a new bike a Specialized Hotrock. Obviously no quick release and no through axles so anyone have a solution to haul the bike in the back of the truck without bringing tools to remove the front wheel? Is there an adapter of some sort that can be used for my current mounts? I couldn't find anything just wanted to put it out here to see if anyone has had a similar issue/solution.

My Guess : its a solid axle fitted with nuts right ?

you have a through axle front hub?

get another mount for the truck bed with a QR ..

The QR stays in the mount,

you use a wrench and loosen the nuts holding the front wheel on,

and when you get there use the wrench again , to tighten the nuts securing the wheel in the fork.

sorry, yeah its a solid axle with nuts. I was hoping to avoid un bolting and bolting the wheel every time. I didn't want to carry a wrench and torque tools with me if I didn't have to.
The QR stays in the mount all the time so you can just slip into the fork, lock and go. super handy bike hauling in the bed of a truck.

Get a moving blanket, put it over your tailgate. Put the bike in the bed with the front wheel over the tailgate.

I will try this...will this work with smaller size bikes?? I will give it a whirl tomorrow

Get a TOPLINE model UG-2500. That's what I use and really like it a lot. No disassembly of any kind required.

I must be missing something. First, you would still have to remove the front wheel, right? Second, after you removed the front wheel, wouldn't the existing mount work?

Maybe you're thinking about a mounting system that does not require wheel removal, but that would not be an "adapter", it would be something to use instead of your existing mount. I made something like this out of pvc pipe. It works but you'll find that it takes more time to secure the bikes than it would to remove and reinstall a front wheel.

If I were you, I'd just carry the wrench. Wouldn't you want to carry one anyhow in case of a flat? I have a few bikes with solid axles and always pack a 15mm stubby wrench when I ride. I don't think you need to worry about torque measurements because wheel nuts need something like 25-30 ft-lbs, and that is heavy cranking with a short 15 mm wrench.

Get a ratcheting socket wrench, and it'll only take a minute or two to deal with it.

Try a set of these on the side rail of the truck bed. No wheel removal necessary.

Yeah, just going to have to remove the front wheel every time. My goal was to just avoid this. I am going to try the blanket idea today when we go for our ride but short of that I will have to just suck it up and remove the wheel. I don't mind removing the wheel but was hoping for a cheat to not :)

Change the boy's front wheel axle to a QR axle AND teach him how to make sure it's Always Tight ! ;)

I did a blanked over the tailgate today and it worked great for running across town but over the road travel that probably isn't great for so I did bike the bullet and order the TOPLINE mount. Will that a try.

A slab of plywood on the pickup bed bottom , allows DIY solutions, if money is an issue..

block of wood with another QR axle through it .. fixed to the plywood , etc..

I am considering a small pickup as my next vehicle. I've seen those tailgate pads and have always wanted to ask this:

Do you just set the bike there and hope gravity keeps it in place, or do you also strap down the frame of the bike inside the bed with bungee cords or similar tie-downs?

I have a Retrax roll top cover that I butt up against the rear tire so the bike isn't going anywhere....but to answer your question, it is always a good idea to secure the rear wheel in the bed. I have only used this method on my FatBike when I'm too lazy to put the bike rack into the hitch for a quick trip to ride. I would not use this method on my road bike.
