What is the most sought after vintage BMX bike?

there is a joe breeze series 2 mtb from 1980 up on ebay right now, looks like it will go for more than 6k. are their any bmx bikes from the 70s that would be similarly collectible? I found something saying the yamaha moto bike was but then read somebody else getting less than 300 for their on ebay.

the breeze bike was 1 in a lot of 25. and prior to that he made the series 1 , but only 10 of those.

I have a 1976 Yammi Moto, they can fetch a pretty high dollar but have to be in amazing original shape. I got mine at a garage sale for $70 16 years ago.

Haro Master. it's 80s but worth insane amounts now. check bmxmuseum.com and you can get a lot more info about oldschool bmx than here

I came across a 2003 Haro Backtrail X1 last year and refurbished it simply because it was a 100% cromoly Haro frame and fork.

PaintedSpokes 01-19-12 08:52 PM

x1 isn't worth anything. even after a full refurb, worth a couple hundred at best. Haro basically went to crap in the 90s and was crap up til 2011.

Chris Chicago 01-20-12 12:33 PM

hara masters arent cheap, but looking at recent ebay results there are a number of bikes that go for multiple times more. hutch, kuwahara, etc.

Juan Foote 01-20-12 04:25 PM

IDK how valuable they are, but I always enjoyed the small, custom builders like Patterson, ELF, etc.
I know there was a Redline made in the mid 80's that was supposedly the lightest BMX bike ever made, at least for some number of years, and very limited production due to cost.

Hutch is pretty much the most sought after vintage bike.

And I always wonder why that is. Being a BMXer from the late 70s/to mid '80s (raced from '80 until '86ish) I never understood the appeal of the Hutch products. I didn't and don't think they are bad, just don't get the hoopla surrounding Hutch. Nothing really innovative, and pretty straightforward in design. Just my opinion though...

iamtim 01-24-12 11:52 AM

I have NO IDEA either. But Hutch stuff today is a niche market within a niche market. I could think of a number of bikes I'd much rather have (a Torker 280X for instance, the first bike I raced on) than a Hutch. I mean... I would think that something like VDC or GJS would be the most sought after today, with their innovative designs and the like, but no... it's Hutch. *shrug*

What is the most sought after vintage BMX bike you ask? Simple:

Why, that would be the one you had back in the day that got stolen!!

ericbaker 02-11-12 08:49 AM

VDC is big money, rivaling hutch for sure, but there is so little of it ourt there compared to hutch, that it doesnt get the same attention. early redlines, esp Squarebacks are fetching big money... almost any 24" or 26" cruiser before 1985 are highly desireable.

The most sought after..? The mythical redline Looptail c. 1975... There were supposed to have been 3 made or something like that, only one known to exist. If one were to pop up on the bay... wouldn't surprise me to see it hit 5 figure$.

yeah, I know that, but that is today. You never know what it'll fetch decades from now. And to be honest, a lot of these bikes that fetch a hefty sum, I'll let you in on a little secret, they really aren't worth it either. See what happened in the real estate market the last decade ? People with old houses got told by the experts that over a decade the value of that slum they live d in and barely maintained was worth as much as 3-4 times what it was at the start of the decade. I told them they were nuts, and guess what ? I was right.

Im not sure but arent the Redline Squarebacks a bit of a rarity these days? and how about the old (spring in frame) Spiders. Then again theres Cooks Bros. I would even say that my personal favorite, the Skyway T.A., might fetch a pretty penny.

ShaggyBike 02-25-12 03:08 PM

Wasn't there a rare Hutch Trickstar with Gold-plated parts? That would fetch some coin!

taekrondo 03-02-12 07:58 AM

I believe that the Skyway t/a 's are going for the most bucks now... i just looked at one on bmx museum and they wanted 1500 for the frame and fork ....and now skyway is starting to make a 24 frame and fork....just my thoughts.
cheers

I remember seeing a gold plated Hutch Trickstar that Woody Itson got as a gift from Hutch.

pitbull007 03-02-12 08:25 PM

Other than the Hutch trickster I would say the CW Phaze 1

Drummerboy1975 03-03-12 07:31 AM

What about an old chrome Schwinn Scrambler with out mags but rather red anodized spokes?

PHAN70M RYDEr 03-13-12 05:20 AM

anything by JMC the JMC andy patterson or darrell young models are probably the rarest..

oh and iamtim, I have a 100% original Torker 280x in my garage!!!

sloar 03-23-12 06:22 AM

back in the 80's i had a trickstar with skyways and hutch cranks, sold it for a redline rl 20 II. with redline flight cranks and perigene mags. man i wish i still had those two bikes.

ilikebikes 03-23-12 09:29 AM

The most sought after bike is the one YOU want the most, but most people go after what THEY'RE TOLD is the most sought after bike.
