Butterflies hatching, flowers everywhere.

(breath thru your teeth, many insect hatches)

It is still a little early where I live. The first sign is a few flowering trees which are completely covered with flowers long before the leaves emerge. I spread desert flowers seeds in my own front yard two decades ago and now they self seed even though most are short-lived annuals. Some are already a few inches across but it will be a couple of weeks before the real flowering begins. The succession of rains that came across California and made it over the mountains sparked a lot of new growth in existing plants like the globe mallows shown below. Too bad Death Valley didn't receive rain until January. It's not supposed to be a spectacular year there. Each year I get a violation letter from my HOA complaining that I haven't pulled the weeds in my yard. Just like groundhog day, it comes every year.

Here is one perennial, the globe mallow. I bought one plant with pink flowers and collected another one with the common orange flower from a construction site. From two came about 20 plants spread around the yard.

These three (desert primrose, Fremont pincushion, and notch leaf phacelia are found in Death Valley as well as the rest of the Mojave desert. The desert primrose is the flower that turns Death Valley to a carpet of yellow in good years.

The last one does give some people a nasty rash much like poison ivy. When the flowering season is over and the plant has spread its seeds I wear gloves to pull the plants.

Happens to all life forms in the desert, including people (who sometimes mix in sarcasm along with their barbs).

I saw where they had to shut down part of the Poppy fields due to something like 150,000 people! Some of whom were trampling across the fields and being idiots. Oh well, another Southern California overpopulation symptom . Joe

bogydave 03-24-19 09:31 PM
