Your Biggest Bike Next to Your Smallest Bike
54 cm BMC SLO2 vs. my 58 cm Univega Gran Rally. The BMC is great for fast rides, PR's, etc., but the Univega is more fun to do all-day rides on.

Weird... I have a 58, a 58 and a 57.5. The 60 hangs on the garage wall... too big.

Two Legnanos, a 58cm Roma Olympiade that I've had since new in 1964, and a recently acquired 54 cm Gran Premio that I couldn't resist on the way home from Eroica CA. I'm determined to get the 54 to fit, and got it close enough to complete 100 Km for the $100 Clunker Challenge. I need a longer seat post, and I think it might work.

Interesting that a couple have bikes that are 4cm different and use them. I would think that size difference is too significant to make work well without significant modification like a wonky nitro technomic stem or one of those threadless stem extenders.
It would be interesting to see how the frame geometries line up to possibly reduce the 4cm size gap. I have two 63.5cm frames as my smallest and two 65cm frames as my largest. The others are 64cm. |
I find that it's the top tube that's the really important measurement. And when you buy a larger frame size, mainly what you're paying for is more seat tube, top tube lengths are typically within a cm or so on a typical 54 vs a typical 58. Knowing this has greatly expanded the universe of bikes I can ride comfortably. Big frames no longer scare me like they used to, and have many benefits like comfort and stability.
