Left Foot or Right Foot?

Which foot down at a stop sign or light?

spelger 12-25-20 09:40 AM

Left.

Merry Christmas.

Dean51 12-25-20 09:41 AM

99+% of the time it's my left. FWIW, I'm left handed and clearly stronger on that side.

Left, even though that ankle is so messed up my cleat is positioned so I can't twist out, and I have to twist in.

DrIsotope 12-25-20 09:47 AM

Right, because that is the correct foot for roads where cars drive on the right. ;)

freeranger 12-25-20 09:53 AM

Left--less chance of dragging ankle across chain or chain rings when getting back onto the pedal.

mcours2006 12-25-20 09:54 AM

I'm left-footed, but I see that most of my riding mates are right-footed. Weird.

I tried right footed one time cuz I noticed that my neoprene covers were wearing unevenly more on the left than right. The result was that I fell flat on my left side. Never did that again.

Exactly my situation, except right.

Well, left, of course.

Left, but for the exact opposite reason.. my stronger right is the foot I'll accelerate/start up with, as it's still clipped in, because I'm right handed.

SalsaShark 12-25-20 10:08 AM

Left or track stand.....although track stands tend to confuse drivers at all-way stop sign intersections.

genejockey 12-25-20 10:16 AM

Right - because if there's a curb to put my foot up on, it'll be on that side.

Koyote 12-25-20 10:20 AM

I'm a leftist.

cyccommute 12-25-20 10:22 AM

Right because if I’m going to fall over at a stop, I’m going to fall away from traffic. I haven’t fallen over at a stopsign in 25 years, however.

shelbyfv 12-25-20 10:30 AM

I've always mounted the bike from the left so it has seemed natural to put my left foot down at a stop. However, I appreciate the idea of right foot down to stay further from traffic. Once on a tour a gout attack forced me to keep my left shoe cleated to the pedal so it was right foot down at stops and when I was fiddling to get my sore and swollen foot into my shoe. Awkward.:(

CAT7RDR 12-25-20 11:06 AM

Mostly right, sometimes left, sometimes both and sometimes none and a slow roll.

mstateglfr 12-25-20 11:15 AM

Hop on the bike from the left side. Right foot unclipped and on the ground at stops.

I'm lefInhabited and footed, if there is any correlation.

billridesbikes 12-25-20 11:19 AM

Left. Avoid the rookie mark on your right calf.

Squeeze 12-25-20 11:21 AM

Both, if it's a long wait at a red light at a busy intersection. Otherwise, either, I guess. I've never really thought about this before. I've only ever used platform pedals; maybe that's why.

cxwrench 12-25-20 11:23 AM

Left. If the road is crowned, and most are, your left foot is closer to the ground than your right. Also Cat 5 tattoo avoidance.

Think I'll risk the tattoo for added safety.

Nope. If you put the left leg down, the right leg goes closer to the drivetrain. Right leg down moves the leg away from the drivetrain.

wolfchild 12-25-20 11:35 AM

I track stand or I put my right foot down. I also don't use clipless pedals so falling over isn't an issue for me.

rydabent 12-25-20 11:47 AM

I voted track stand since it is very easy on my trike. :)

plowmanjoe 12-25-20 11:54 AM

what's this safety thing some people are mentioning? Are people really putting the right foot down for safety?
