Stem/handlebar locknut ?
 
Hi, I'm trying to disassemble this bike, which I haven't touched for 8 years. Can anybody help me to identify which tool I need to get this locknut (?) off? I think I must have it lying around somewhere, but it's been a while

Not sure what you need

Headset locknut? or stem or handlebars

Quill stem has a wedge dont unscrew it all the way just a bit to be proud, then use a mallet and hit the bolt end, tonreleasr the wedge


Your Public library has bike repair books to read, you know.. you can ask better questions then..

The correct tool is indeed a lockring wrench but a brass punch inserted into the notches and driven with a small hammer can work too.

NB newer headsets have eliminated that notched ring so you dont have to put it back on.. throw it away ..
just add a spacer.of similar thickness, . & use 2 wrenches..
a special headset 32 for the bottom , and a adjustable spanner , for the lock nut you already removed in the picture..

French manufactured headsets & other stuff get shipped across the English channel for assembling bikes in England , of course..

Once you remove it with a hammer and big flathead screwdriver, you can throw it away. Just use an aluminum spacer in its place.

You need the Hozan lock ring tool...aka "Rock Ring Wrench".

The notched ring makes adjusting the bearing much easier imo. With the notched ring, I don't even need the "Rock Ring Wrench"...the notched ring keeps everything from moving as you tighten the locknut.

Without the notched ring to keep the adjustable cup from moving, getting the proper bearing adjustment was much tough and require the "Rock Ring Wrench".

So you buy a hook spanner that fits, buy the right tools.. you reuse them, I Don' t ... ( I have seen old ones with teeth interfaces and no flats for wrenches)

Campagnolo never did not have them on any of their headsets , neither has any of the better parts ..makers since the 70's..


headset wrenches 32mm *x 1/8" thick *36 for 1.125? 40 for 1,25"

Exactly. They also never had two lock nuts on any of their other bearing components. There's no reason for it. It's like wearing two of the same hat. Or two pairs of shoes.
