Can I use a ultegra 9 spd cassette on my mountain bike - city wheels.

Im thinking of purchasing a set of Mavic Speedcity wheels - 700 wheels with disc designed for mountain bikes. The set Im looking at has a ultegra 9 spd cassette, I currently run a 9 spd xt cassette with my mavic crossmax wheels. Any problems running the different cassette (road cassette), other than the chain being more molded to one cassette over another?

the only difference you'll encounter is chain slack in your low gears. And like you said the old chain is mated to the old cog set depending on, well, alot of things...

My Volpe is set up with a MTB front crank and a 12-27 cassette on the back. I love it, gets me a 98 inch gear at the top end, and a 22 inch at the bottom, with nice tight spacing inbetween. Get a new chain while you're at it and you'll be good to go. That way, if the old chain isn't too worn, you can keep it in a baggie along with the old cassette if you ever want to change back.

My LBS sort of took a double take when they first saw it, but once I explained the logic they agreed that it was a very practical setup.

It should work fine. If your chain is "molded" to the cassette you need a new chain.

just tossed on a new xt chain last week, should be good to go.

Oh, one last thing... (as Columbo might say), you will probably want to check the B-Screw adjustment on the derailer after you get things set up.
