Fastest 20 min (to same point) race?

This is 41ish, except I'm interested in races. What is the fastest mph 20+ min time ROAD race you have done or seen?
I'm looking for group/pac speed.
It can be longer, but looking at ending up at the same point to eliminate altitude, and wind.
A crit or CR, or RR with laps ~ 20 min is the best measure.
No TTs, no Track.

I didn't get to race it, but the P/1 SLC crit last weekend was fast. About the same speed as San rafael it looks like on a (arguably..) more techy course. Here is a teammate's strava.

29.5 ( I didn't see the 20 min spped). SR was 29.7 20 min.

tobukog 07-28-19 11:19 AM

My fastest from last year was probably 47km/h. 29.7 at San Rafael is impressive -- it's not a slow course, but it's not super fast either. I've lapped the field at San Rafael but there's no way I could have done it if they were going 29.7.

furiousferret 07-28-19 12:41 PM

To be honest, I've never actually raced a crit or rr where the overall pace (not surges) was so wildly fast it put the field in stress. For the most part they've all been 25-26 with surges to 30 for the purpose of closing breaks. Fastest I've probably been in is the practice crits we've done around 28.

I'd love to be a crit where the pace is so frantically fast that's actually a factor and its not just everything being neutralized up to the sprint. In the 4's that's a tough ask though.

Did two different Gateway Cup crits at 30.5 mph average for 60 and 75 mins. Last 20 mins of both races averaged 31.

The San Rafael women's pro race was also the fastest women's race I've ever seen too. Every other lap was a $100+ often $200 prime.

well, a track point/scratch race would certainly qualify

What do we have for 20 min average speed?
But not road racing.

you'd think, but i checked the times from nats this year since they were incredibly fast, and turns out the scratch and points finals didn't even take 20 minutes they were going so fast. so yes, but no.

This video starts with 110 laps to go. I suspect it started with 200. It is hard to imagine a faster race than this considering the participants.

But also not road racing and doing things not allowed in road racing.

duly noted. but you didn't specify that in your original post

I guess I should have, but as there is a track racing forum, and I posted under Road Bike Racing, I was looking for Road Bike racing results. I just wanted the start and finish to be the same to eliminate those downhill or tailwind stages.
I'm looking for classic USA type high average speed numbers. So crits, CR and RR where a 20 min ave speed is high. So far SR @ 29.7 seems the highest and it does have an incline. Anything higher?

Hermes 07-29-19 09:26 PM

I watched the final stage of the TdF tonight and the last 8 laps (32 miles) on the Champs-Élysées looked fast especially the last 20 minutes. I searched but could not find an actual recorded average speed. I would estimate the speed over 32 mph even with the climbing section up the Champs-Élysées. On the downhill section, the commentators were constantly saying the speed was 40 mph.

I would find it difficult to imagine a faster average road race speed than the UCI world tour riders racing loops in Paris setting up for a sprint finish for the final stage win for the TdF.

I think the William boys are as fast. Not for a whole Tour stage - but for an hour.
The WT riders are marathoners, while the USA crit monsters are more middle distance. There is overlap, but just like the temptation to use track riders, there is a lot of speed and power you give up to race 4-5 hours a day.

When I was there last year, for a pro, it looked flat.

The amateurs that came through on that "experience" ride thing about an hour before the race arrived were humping it and probably barely going over 20. You could tell they were about to pop to show off.

Some kind of event they run on the same course hours before the race goes through.

Would a track "elimination" race be long enough in duration to get to 20min? Just found a Youtube video.......close enough...about 15min.

topflightpro 07-30-19 06:33 AM

The Champs-Élysées is no where near flat. It's a steady incline all the way up to the Arc de Triomphe.

topflightpro 07-30-19 06:38 AM

Doge, how are you measuring speed for these events? The difference in distance traveled in 20 for 29.6 mph vs 29.7 mph is 0.033 miles (roughly 53 meters). If you're using GPS for speed, I wonder if that's within the margin of error.

Yeah. Like I said above. Gateway Cup in St. Louis.

Here you go. 51.2 km/h by Heg, who lapped the field twice -- once solo.

Results

tobukog 07-30-19 07:37 AM

Personally, I often find "fast" races to often be easier. Usually when I'm over 48km/h average speed, I have a better chance because it indicates a fast easy course with lots of momentum. In courses that have lots of starting and stopping, my lack of fitness compared to younger riders begins to catch up with me. So when I finish a race and say, "Wow, that was a fast race!", I usually mean that it was a HARD race (for me).

I am grabbing a GPS/Garmin average over a 20 min periods on any course. To know the margin of error for these would take work. The more devices averaged - the more accurate. I have found that while Garmin instantaneous speed my be off it is very good over longer distance. I know Michal likes to post his Strava. He posted his whole WC ride with power. So I just looked for him.
I could compare to other riders that post, but more work than I wanted.

For SR the winning break was over 20 sec ahead so I can search for one of those riders, it is just more work. Even so that may not be reflected in 20 min power without finding that part where they get ahead.
