29er XTR tubular carbon wheels for road application?
 

So I found these really cool Shimano XTR carbon 12mm through axle cross country MTB racing wheels available NOS for sale. They use centerlock disc and 12mm through axle front and rear. Apparently you cannot run an 11 speed road cassette on them & must run a 10 speed mountain cassette.

But I would like to run these on a disc road bike. Am I crazy?

As far as I know, “29er” size wheels are actually 700c and these are tubular so it sounds like the rim is designed to take a Cyclo-cross tubular in a 29er size. Couldn’t I also run a wide road tubular in like a 28 or 30mm width and mount these wheels on my titanium disc, 12mm front and rear through axle frame? It is spec’d At being limited to 28mm width but I was going to check and see is maybe 30mm would fit.

Even though this is a new road disc build, being limited to a 10 speed cassette is probably OK since I could run Dura Ace 7800 or 7900 10 speed shifters. I have heard that using a Dura Ace 9100 crank offers some extra clearance in some aspect to provide less cross chaining for disc applications.

Anyway, I was hoping someone might be familiar with these XTR tubular wheels and could share if they think they might be made road worthy.

Here is a link to the rear wheel only which has the 12 x142 through axle that I need. I guess they also made some in 135mm for quick release use.

I have messaged the seller about cross compatibility for road, through axle disc use. He wasn’t able to state definitively if it would work. They are 26 mm wide which should work. He thought 29er wheels had an outer diameter of 27” at the rim. I don’t think this is right. I’m pretty sure that 29er tubulars are just wide versions of other 700c Cyclo-cross tubulars.

Could somebody help help me out here who runs tubulars in Cyclo-cross about their cross compatibility?

or you could run a newer 11sp build with an 11-40/11-42 cassette. Wide range 11sp mtb cassettes fit on 10sp mtb hubs.

Thanks for your reply. A 40t or 42t low sprocket sounds way to low for the road gearing that I will be needing. It’s too bad that they don’t make a tight ratio MTB 11 speed cassette like a 12-25 range.

11-34 11 speed compatible cassettes also work. Unless they are really cheap though I wouldn't bother going tubular with such a shallow rim on a road bike

I dont think a 12-25 11sp MTB cassette wouldnt have a lot of application. Most anything on the higher end of MTB(so 11sp) is 1x at this point, so a wider range cassette is needed to get the easy gears needed to climb.
12-25 with a 32t cassette(for example) would make short steep climbs more difficult...and those are a big part of MTB.

That would not fit on a 10 speed freehub body, the reason 11 speed MTB cassettes can fit a standard 10 speed freehub body is because the larger cogs will clear the spokes. The larger the cog on the back the further away from the spokes the chain will sit. Shimano makes an 11 speed 105 R7000 cassette that fits on a 10 speed freehub body, it's an 11-34.

From the ebay decription it is not 100% clear if these are regular non-tubless compatible rims or actually made for a glue on tire with the sewn in tube. Before buying I'd ask for a pic of the rim cross section.

5 year old wheels that appear to be a dead item. I would stay away.
Where are you going to get tires? Limited choice of tubular tires for these, no?
What are you trying to achieve? Gravel bike with MTB components?
