Is it possible to swap road bike tires with gravel/cyclocross ones and vice versa?
I don't think I'll get the information I want here. Mod please close the thread. Thanks.

Yes, you can put road tires a gravel bike.
Also: “fetus position” ??? |
It's all about clearance. If it fits, you can use them. I doubt you would get gravel tires on most road bikes due to clearance, but cyclocross tires are a real possibility. The other way around - you can get really wide slicks on a gravel bike.

I just did this.
I recently got a new Trek Checkpoint for commuting, and other types of rides. I swapped out the 700x40 gravel tires for 700x32 Gatorskins. Only did this as the weather has changed and the roads are better. Will swap back when the the weather turns back or if I do real gravel or lite touring. |

i used gatorskin tires on my cyclocross bike and would swap to cyclocross for rail trail riding for a touch wider tire. it all really depends on the frame. |
The constraints to consider are:
There is a lot of latitude in what tire widths will fit what rim widths. There are recommendation charts, but suffice it to say your CX rims will probably be fine with anything but the narrowest of road tires. 700c tires are all the same bead circumference (give or take a couple millimeters). So you're ok here. If your rims require tubes, there are tube tires for road bikes that will work. If they require tubeless, there are road tires that will meet that requirement as well. If you intend to ride your bike on roads, road tires would be an appropriate choice. So maybe this provides the information you are looking for which can be summarized by "Yes." |
