Gangl #6 rides again
 

A while ago I came across this Gangl, cleaned it up a bit, replaced tires, tape, hoods, cables, saddle, etc. Finally got it out on the road today. This is serial number 6:

interesting color- I like it.
his bikes are graphically straightforward and I will go as far to say Italian influenced.

I just picked one of these up in 48 cm. I was impressed by the workmanship. This has a lot of nice custom touches on every part of the bike. I'll bet the OP's bike rides great. Here is my pick up:

Thank you both for posting another new-to-me marque. Is the company still in biz? The website says "Not taking orders until January 2019."

Rich still very much has his shop in Golden, CO but is involved with some work that prevents him from doing much with bicycle frames. His shop is the best bicycle building and painting shop in the US. He has been building since 1980 (give or take a year) but hasn't gone out of his way to promote himself. Like I just said in another subject thread, if I wasn't a framebuilder/painter myself, I would have either Rich or Jeff Bock in Iowa (who has been building and painting since 1976) build me a frame.

Gangl frames are both lovely and, apparently, hen's teeth. There was a fairly large display of Gangl bikes at NAHBS/Denver a while back---at least 15 bikes? I had never heard of him, and was mightily impressed both with the quality and range of frames he'd built. Seeing all those bikes gave me the impression he had built quite a few frames. I spoke with somebody there who knew him, who said something along the lines of: "A big chunk of what he's built is here on display. He's only built about 50-60 frames."

Fattic-sensei likely knows better than me, and maybe the fella in Denver was pulling my leg, but my understanding was that Gangl wasn't building much more than a couple frames per year.

Here's a few, to give you an idea. There were a lot of track bikes, one or two with carbon seatstays, and a titanium frame. All the paint/finishes were beautiful:

I first heard of Gangl bikes looking at a photo gallery from NAHBS/Denver. I had no idea then that Rich had been making bikes since the 1970s. I don't believe I have ever seen a total number for the frames he has made. However, I have frame #67 and according to Rich it was made in January of 1985. So that's pretty much 10/year for the first half of the 80s. I have no idea how he can seemingly be so fluent in so many materials while only making a handful of frames. In a few months I should be able to share #67 . It's being sent to Rich so he can restore it back to its original glory.

Well, there's some actual data. The fella I was talking to in Denver was either incorrect, lying, or pulling my leg pretty hard. Or, you know, my brain...

I had never heard of Gangl bikes until I recently bought one. It was one of those ads screaming buy the bike fast before it disappears and do the research later. After reading this thread, I'm sorry it's radically too small for me. These are beautiful bikes.

I’ve seen a few small ones listed recently. What size is yours?

48 cm with a 52 cm top tube.
