What would make a bar more bike friendly
 

Of course this could have gone in to the general sub-forum but I'm trying to cater to the local SSFG crowd so...

In the near future I'm going to be opening a tavern and wondered if I would get some suggestions on how I could better cater to the cyclist community. This will be a small 1000sqft beer only bar with some arcade and pinball machines in the back. Besides lots of bike parking what could we do, goldsprints?

Also, a couple places in Chicago offer a discount to cyclists, just bring in your helmet to get 10-15% off.

parking and the air compressor were good ideas..... just have some tools lying around too.... as well as some inner tubes... im just sayin, if i went to a bar and got a flat, and the owner sold me tubes, id be a customer for life.

Beer or drink special for customer's arriving by bicycle. Tip Top in Columbus, Ohio, had $1 PBR drafts for cyclists.

Honestly, as long as the beer is good, the food is good, and there's somewhere safe to leave a bike I'd be happy.

The chance to buy a few basic spares wouldn't hurt, if I got a flat on the way there and used up my spare tube I'd be quite happy for the chance to buy a replacement tube at a sensible price. If I can buy a tube anywhere for $5 and you're charging $10, don't expect to see me again any time soon.

Redbones in [Greater Boston Metro area] does bike valet parking.

Hang awesome and not so awesome bikes on the walls and in the rafters. +Whatever other bike related decor you can scare up. Start a "wall of shame" with customers' broken parts on a designated wall, column, whatever.

If not a compressor, certainly offer a quality, bombproof pump. How 'bout a workstand outside with some tools chained to it?

Cycling events. Maybe team up with a LBS to have a weekly, shop-sponsored ride start and end at your place. Or start one of your own.

See if you can get a decent local mechanic to moonlight at your place as waiter, barback, etc.

Also, if there's a CM in your area, offer specials to anyone that comes in with a map of that night's route. Put helmet hooks on the underside of tables and the bar. Selling tubes and chains would be rad. If you're serving food, be sure to have a good vegan/vegetarian selection. Messenger specials. Have a bike rack just for regulars with their names on it. Have a house lock or two in case someone forgets theirs. Make sure you have a floor that won't get scratched by cleats/isn't too slippery for road shoes. Or, give away hospital-style booties to throw over SPD-shoes so that people can walk around without skating/scratching the floor. Good beer. Sell gels and **** just in case people stop by on long rides. Have jerseys or caps made with the bar logo. have stuff that relates to the cycling season I.E., during TDF have specials on French beer, during the winter have hot toddies, in the fall put grass and dirt all over the place so the CX dudes feel at home.

Get a proper bike rack. None of those stupid grade-school theft magnet **** racks, get a good one.

It would also be nice to have a water pump or hose outside by the mechanic station so that riders could fill up their water bottles and camelbaks without coming in and bugging your bartenders every 5 secs. -- I second the idea of stocking energy bars, for the riders that are continuing on longer rides. -- It would also been sweet if you had a "Wall of Shame" where bikers can donate their un-salvagable parts... You could their hang them up in a designated area in your bar, OR you could have a local artist design a sculpture from all the "road-shrapnel" and resurrect it in the front of your kick-ass bar as a beacon to all riders. Plus, I would think that it would build bike comradery within the community as riders surrendered pieces of their riding history to your sculpture. --Then you would always be known for the killer shop with the bike sculpture!! I'm excited for ya, it all sounds: AWESOME!! Don't forget to take pics!
